It’s Beltane! Can you feel the rush of energy as new life bursts forth from the Earth? Trees and flowers bud, then bloom. Creeks rush again after the still slumber of winter. Songs and mating calls dance on the air. Life is filled with potential.

We celebrate the coming of spring with Beltane Festival, one of four cross-quarter gateways of the Solar Year that mark the midpoints between the solstices and equinoxes. Traditionally, Beltane is May 1. The astronomical alignment is May 4. Astrologically, Beltane comes when the Sun reaches 15 degrees of Taurus. This year, that happens on May 5 (also Cinco de Mayo). So celebrate all week!

Beltane derives from Gaelic and Druid traditions and means “bright fire.” The traditional theme is purification. In modern times, Beltane is often blended with the more Germanic celebration of May Day, which falls on May 1 and focuses on fertility.

In the pagan calendar, Beltane is one of the most popular Sabbats. The community comes together after a long winter to celebrate the return of the Sun.

The Maypole dance is the central activity. Like the budding flowers of May, the Maiden Goddess has come of age, full of self-discovery. She meets with the young Sun God in courtship and sacred marriage, and the dance around the Maypole honors the life-giving fertility of the Earth. Dancers focus on their dreams and plans, then leap the Beltane fire for luck and fulfillment of their wishes.

This is a time to delight in life’s blessings. Honor your spirit. Take a walk in the forest, plant your garden, meet your neighbors, get out and play! Notice the sensations of spring. Breathe deeply, let the scents and sounds fill your being.

This year’s Beltane Festival lines up with the waxing Wesak Full Moon, making this a supercharged gateway for manifestation. The energies are ripe for shaping and crafting your dreams. Be clear about your intentions…they are blooming!
