Solstice Moon

The Gemini Full Moon is reshaping us from the inside out.

Pluto aligns with the Sun in late Sagittarius, both opposing the Moon in Gemini.  A wide Grand Fixed Cross forms between Mars in Taurus, Saturn in Leo, Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Aquarius.

Under these planetary influences, we are perfecting the Self, harmonizing with each other.  There’s a sense of urgency to heal and move forward.  We’re completing a cycle that began at the Winter Solstice last year.

The combustible conjunction of Pluto with our Sun purifies and redefines the Self, in alignment with Divine Will.  We move toward wholeness, completion.

The depth of healing is particularly profound at this time.  Emotions rise as old wounds surface.  It’s not important to understand what we’re processing, only to allow the changes by letting go.

Jupiter moves to square Saturn on December 16, the first of three alignments that will influence the passage from 2006 to 2007.  These giant outer planets in stubborn fixed signs create a push-me-pull-you dance.  Expand, contract.  Revision, restructure.  Recognize and release limiting beliefs.  At the same time, acknowledge the practical parameters of your reality.

Enjoy the journey!

Venus, Evening Star

Elegant and regal, evening star Venus grows brighter in the western sky each night as she travels further and further from the Sun.  She blesses us with loving wisdom.

In the east, Mars shines as a beacon to remind us of our passions.

Venus, the goddess, divine feminine.  Warrior Mars, planet of passion of purpose.  They balance in the night sky, west and east.  We, on Earth, in between.

In her 40-year journey through the zodiac, Venus creates, over and over, the pattern of a five-pointed star.  Symbol of the Goddess.  Balance of heaven and Earth.  She presides as the evening star, then vanishes into the underworld for 40 days before rising like the phoenix as morning star.  Cycles of life, death and rebirth.  Purification.  A cosmic clock.

When Venus turns retrograde on December 24, we’ll have the opportunity to re-examine what the Goddess of Love and Beauty represents in our lives – our values, our relationships, our passions, dreams, creativity.  When she returns to forward motion as the morning star on February 3, we are filled with greater peace and understanding.

During the retrograde cycle, Venus transits Aquarius and Capricorn and aligns with the planetoid Chiron, the Wounded Healer.  Old wounds will be ripe for healing and release, both individually and collectively.

Venus asks, What is Love? How does Love express through us, through our relationships, through our families and communities?  How do we create more Love on the planet?

Peace through healing.  Peace through harmony.  This is the realm of Venus.

Season of Light

Winter Solstice, longest night.  Stillpoint.  Home.

As the Sun journeys through Capricorn during the winter months, we turn inward for reflection.

Darkness lingers.

Within this eternal womb lie our deepest desires, our passions, our hopes and dreams for the future.  From the darkest night, Solar Light returns to Earth.

Myths and traditions around the world honor this Season of Light.

Winter Solstice is the last of the year's four Cardinal Festivals.  The Sun enters Capricorn and winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere.  Energetically, the alignment of Sun, Earth and Moon creates a portal for higher consciousness to enter the Earth plane.

The Solstice period marks the birth of the Solar Child at the time of receding winter light, signifying spiritual redemption and rebirth, and affirming the promise of renewed earthly life in the Spring.  Long ago, December 25 was the accepted date of the Winter Solstice, before the ancient star priests were able to date it precisely on December 21.

According to “festivalogist” Dan Furst, the late-December period has been celebrated in the northern world for more than 6,000 years as the birth or feast day of many solar deities, resurrected kings and queens, and saviors.

At this time, Christians welcome the Christ.  In Egypt, Isis and Hathor are honored.  A Sun Goddess festival in the Japanese Shinto calendar honors the retreat and return of the Sun.  The Cherokee of North America also celebrate a solar festival.

In the Tarot, the season is symbolized by the Hermit, a personification of Saturn in a black robe who carries the lantern of esoteric wisdom, and the exuberant child of the Sun card.

Other solar notables celebrated at this time include the father-son team of Osiris and Horus in Egypt, the Persian solar deity Mithras, the Greek sun god Apollo/Helios, the ancient Babylonian god Baal, the resurrected god Baldur in  Norse tradition, Zoroastrian saint and teacher Zarathusthra, and the prophet Mohammed in Indonesia’s Islamic tradition.

This period is also observed as the Jewish Festival of Lights.  Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 25 and continues for eight days, celebrating the miracle of expanding Light in the Temple.

African-Americans and others of African descent observe the week-long Kwanzaa celebration beginning December 26.  Kwanzaa cultivates seven principles -- unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.  A candle representing each principle is lighted each night for a week.

As the year ends, the Festival of Saturn bridges to the New Year.  Here emerges the image of “Father Time” as the Reaper, a figure of Saturn. He is also associated with prophecy and esoteric spiritual wisdom, lighting the way into a new cycle of knowledge.

This year, the New Moon in Capricorn on December 30/31 coincides with the turn of the calendar year, emphasizing the themes of completion, endings and letting go as Light returns and the solar cycle begins anew.

Mercury Redux

Messenger Mercury resumed forward motion back on December 4, but some computers (including mine!) don’t seem to know it.

Lost mail, transportation glitches, scrambled messages and mixed signals can continue throughout the “shadow period” of Mercury Retrograde, which lasts two weeks before and two weeks after the “official” retrograde period.

To celebrate this pesky transit, here’s the winning entry in our Mercury Retrograde story contest.  The winner is Kelli Reese of Kalispell, Montana, who writes of her Mercury Retrograde car purchase.

“My Retrograde story begins with the purchase of a vehicle during the first week of the 3-week period. It was a conscious decision born out of need since my truck had decided to croak after 207,000 miles. I blessed my decision and went ahead with the purchase.

“It was a Chevy Blazer and it seemed to be a good purchase. Not two days into my ownership, I noticed a leak under the car. I took it in and it needed a new air hose. I had that fixed and got it back the next day. I drove another car off the lot for the day. Two days later the car wouldn't start.  I had it towed back to the dealership and it needed an alternator. I had that fixed and again drove the same car off the lot for another day.

“The last thing that happened in this car was the locks began making a clicking noise, as if they were going up and down, but they weren't. I took it back and they located a short...they once again assigned me to the used car from the lot and fixed the vehicle. This was all within 2 weeks.

“When Mercury went direct, the car seemed to run very well. It wasn't until the next time that Mercury went retrograde just a few short months later that I couldn't reverse the car without bolting across the road in short little spurts. I parked the car in the parking lot at my work and left it there for a week thinking it was truly a goner and that it just hated Mercury Retrograde.

“I finally sucked it up and drove the jerky car down the road to the shop and the mechanic asked me what the symptoms were. I explained them and he got in the vehicle and pressed the 4-wheel drive button.  Apparently, I had hit it with my hand (it wasn't in the best location) when I was shifting and it didn't have a working light to let you know it was on. I felt humbled and tried to laugh along with the mechanic.

“I traded the car in before Mercury went retrograde again.”

Kelli wins a 60-minute Astrology Reading and a badge of courage for buying a vehicle while Mercury was retrograde!  Thanks for sharing your experience and humor with our Alignments readers.
