We remember the gift of divine timing, the changing of the seasons, with these upcoming alignments… Summer Solstice -- June 21 -- 2:46 a.m. EDT; 6:36 a.m. GMT Capricorn Full Moon -- June 22 -- 12:14 a.m. EDT; 4:45 a.m. GMT This is a celestial treat with the Full Moon enlightening the Solstice passage. Don’t plan on getting much sleep. Stay up late and celebrate! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solstice Celebration The apex of the solar year is fast approaching, the day of longest light in the Northern Hemisphere. The Sun reaches its most northern point, kissing the Earth with fertility and abundance. All life responds. The Summer Solstice has been celebrated around the world since ancient times. The word “solstice” comes from the Latin - from “sol” meaning sun, and “sistere,” to cause to stand still. Astronomically, the solstice happens when the angle of the Earth tilts closest to the sun as it moves on its highest track in the sky. Astrologically, the solstice marks the Sun’s entry into the sign of Cancer. For many in the Northern Hemisphere, this is the start of summer. In Europe, this is the traditional “midsummer” since it’s the middle of the growing season. Germanic tribes, Slavs and Celts lit huge bonfires to celebrate Midsummer’s Eve. Jumping bonfires brings love and luck, and banishes unwanted energies. Druids view the midsummer as the wedding of Heaven and Earth. In pagan traditions, June 25 is Old Litha, an alternate name for this celebration, although most modern solstice celebrations occur on June 20 or 21. Ancient cultures marked the passage of the Sun in relation to the Earth with pillars and fixed stones at sacred sites. Sunlight falls on certain symbols or into specific positions on the solstice. At Newgrange in Ireland, the solstice Sun lights a certain spot in an ancient chamber. The axis of Stonehenge, which aligns with the monument's entrance, is oriented to the direction of the midsummer sunrise. At Chaco Canyon in North America, a dagger of sunlight pierces a mystical spiral on Fajada Butte at mid-day on the solstice. We sing the sun across the summer sky at the solstice. We celebrate with joy the abundance of blessings showered upon us throughout the year. At this gateway, we also have the opportunity for quantum change, growth and forward movement. Foods and herbs that support the body, mind and spirit at this time include leafy green vegetables, sprouts, herbs in the mint family, dill and fennel. The herb traditionally associated with the solstice is St. John’s wort, or “mugwort,” which is placed under the pillow to increase psychic sensitivity. St. John’s wort balances the body’s nervous system and can be calming during this intense transition period. Ceremony focusing on our spiritual progress is appropriate at the Summer Solstice. It’s also a perfect time to restate our commitment to serve humanity in ways that bring us joy and abundance on all levels. After the solstice passes, we become more inner-focused as the days grow shorter and we begin the annual journey toward Winter Solstice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Directions This year the Full Moon in Capricorn follows the Summer Solstice by less than 24 hours, increasing the potency of both alignments. The Sun is at his brightest during the day, and the Moon shines with succulent fullness all night. Our conscious and unconscious self will be illuminated! This near-conjunction of the annual solar cycle and the monthly lunar cycle emphasizes the ending of something old, and the beginning of something new. What in your life has changed in the six months since the Winter Solstice? What is ending? What is beginning? This is a time of reflection, and celebration. The Summer Solstice is a gateway to other realms of experience. At this alignment, a new vision for our individual and collective experience may emerge, and we may take a quantum leap into a new reality. The opposition of the Sun in Cancer and Moon in Capricorn at the lunation is joined by two more opposing planets -- Mars in Aries and Jupiter in Libra -- creating a grand cross in cardinal signs. The cardinal signs are associated with the cardinal directions -- Aries in the east, Capricorn in the south, Libra in the west, and Cancer in the north. The grand cross formed by the two oppositions, square to each other, indicates a change of direction and focus. In what new directions would your soul like to take you? Open your mind. From 1998 to 2001, I had lived in northern New Mexico and often visited and offered ceremony at sacred sites throughout the Four Corners region. Those years were filled with wonder and awe. On a daily basis, I experienced the kinds of miracles I never want to take for granted. Multidimensional activations, initiations, and direct experiences with the Star Nations. Much of the material for my metaphysical books and Star Path workshops was “downloaded” in the back country of Northern New Mexico. I’d been away nearly four years, living alternately in Sedona, Arizona, Crestone, Colorado, and most recently, Boulder, Colorado. It came as a welcome surprise when I was invited back to live once again in these sacred lands, the home of my heart.
