GETTING UNBLOCKED I apologize for the late delivery of this issue of Creative Careers Unleashed. I've been blocked! I set out to write about Handling Baggage but it just wouldn't happen. So, I thought why not talk about my dilemma and how I am handling it -- in hopes that you can transfer the ideas to those situations you encounter. Here we go... ============================================================= HOT LINKS Are you blocked by pain or chronic illness? It happened to me a few weeks ago. I was downtown for a Saturday morning workshop. I headed out at 1 expecting to cruise home with no hassles. Turned the corner and came to a dead stop. Forgot about the Santa Claus parade! Ah ha, I thought if I head East I can go down the street where the parade started and get outta town. Got there only to discover the street was blocked off by big barricades. Sh-t! I was starting to get antsy. Turned onto a West bound avenue figuring I could out run the parade (it was on a parallel avenue). Boy was I wrong. The city (jeez how do they plan?) had decided this was the perfect day to block off the avenue. Long story short. It took me an hour to get back to where I started. And, a trip that normally takes 25 minutes took 2 hours. You can probably relate. But, has that happened to your career? You've know what you want. You have a plan to get there. Then something comes out of left field and you're blocked. What do you do? #1 Take a breath As soon as I recognized how stressed I was making myself. I consciously relaxed my posture and took several deep breaths. Stress interferes with generating creative solutions, according to the November 2005 issue of Scientific American Mind. Relaxing helped me think about alternatives. More in a moment. ============================================================= QUOTES "You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith." -- Mary Manin Morrissey ""I've never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don't understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live through helps to make you the person you are now." -- Sophia Loren ""The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong" -- Thomas Carlyle ============================================================= GETTING UNBLOCKED – continued So, what else can you do if your blocked. #2 Shift Your Focus I had been working on a draft of my newsletter for the last week or more. But, almost every time I sat down to write -- nothing. So, I would shift my attention to something else: writing my Blog, doing my taxes, anything that would take my brain to another space. Then when I'd come back I'd be able to write a bit more. In fact, right now I'm writing a report for a client. I shift from writing that report to doing other things, whenever I get stuck as to just how to word a recommendation or present and idea. When I go back, voila! The writing flows. #3 Relax Your Standards When it became really clear that I wasn't going to be able to write my newsletter by December 1st, I said to myself, "I'll just wait and see what comes to me!" What finally came was the idea of writing about Unblocking. And, this edition flowed -- 30 minutes to write it. One more suggestion in a minute... but first a word from a valued affiliate. ============================================================= DO YOU WISH YOU HAD MORE ENERGY? Do you drag your butt through the day? Do you wake up tired? Go to bed exhausted? Has your life lost its zest? Sadly you're not alone! More than 20,000,000 Americans and 1,000,000 Canadians lack the energy they need to live their lives. Are you one of them? You can get your energy back. And, you can add more zip to your life. I know because I did. And, I did it through the simple, easy to learn, tips shared with me by a wonderful colleague Diana Lindstrom. Diana knows what it's like to have to carefully watch every step and monitor every move. You see Diana is a Post Polio Survivor. If she doesn't manage her energy… she doesn't walk! She doesn't get out of bed. And, she doesn't get to do what she loves. Over the last year Diana was kind enough to share he story and her secrets with me. And, now you can learn how to manage Your Energy™ Read more about the Manage Your Energy™ program here: http://www.uc.dianalindstrom.com ============================================================= HANDLING BAGGAGE FROM THE PAST - continued #4 Give Up Control AA has an expression, "Let go. Let god." We need to learn when it makes sense to press on and when it makes sense to let go and give up control (which we probably don't have anyway). I'm learning to recognize the times when I can't power it through. I like a variation of the Rule of Three. If it happens, or doesn't happen, after 3 sincere attempts, it's probably not going to happen. Time to let go ... and see what shows up instead.
