[CREATIVE CAREERS UNLEASHED] Doing What's Important - Part 2 http://ezezine.com In this issue, more about actually accomplishing your priorities. CREATIVE CAREERS UNLEASHED! from Turning Point Strategies and Lyle T. Lachmuth Have you ever noticed this phenomenon? As soon as you buy a new car, suddenly everyone is driving YOUR car? There's a scientific reason behind this phenomenon which I'm not going to explain (Check out Reticular Activating System (RAS) in the hot links). And, it's been happening to me all week. Ever since I began writing and Blogging about "Doing What's Important", I've noticed articles on time and priorities and had conversation after conversation about people's struggles with spending time on what they love, on what's really, really important. And, that includes me.... in spades! So, in the belief that my challenges aren't unique, I'm going to use my struggles with time and priorities to explore tactics for ... ======================================================================= HOT LINKS Read the last issue of CREATIVE CAREERS UNLEASHED here: Https://member.ezezine.com/home/72/72-2005.05.15.15.43.archive.txt Learn about the Reticular Activating System and its role in what we focus on: http://www.answers.com/reticular%20activating%20system Read more about DOING WHAT'S IMPORTANT at my Blog: http://lyletlachmuth.typepad.com/turningpoints/ Check out the University of Phoenix and the MBA program I will be teaching in: http://welcome.phoenix.edu/online/default.aspx Discover your Enneagram Type here at my coach's site: http://enneagramcentral.com/testa.htm ======================================================================= DOING WHAT'S IMPORTANT - Part 2 First a little background. I'm currently working on and in my 5th career (6th if you count the 7 month stint as a milkman). When I began my 5th career, I thought I'd build a successful freelance writing practice. Well, a year and many failed attempts to secure writing contracts showed that wasn't going to work. So, I switched gears and focused on another grand passion: coaching. That career focus took off gang busters and went really well until my Fibromyalgia Syndrome massively flared up. So, instead of forging ahead as originally planned I was forced to stop and slow down. I used the time to think, pray, and experiment. Till finally I spiraled back to where I first started my thinking about coaching but with a whole new perspective... ======================================================================= QUOTES "We shall not cease from exploring And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." -- T. S. Eliot, Little Gidding, Four Quartets ======================================================================= DOING WHAT'S IMPORTANT - continued A few months ago, when I was well into recovery from my FMS, it became really, really, really clear to me that my calling was to Teach. I'd known for years that I was 'meant' to be a Teacher but it really wasn't until I had been really incapacitated and was in recovery I really realized how much teaching meant to me. So, I began focusing on how I could bring more opportunities to teach into my work life. Within a month I had an opportunity to try out for and was accepted to teach at the University of Phoenix. But, what would this mean for my former career? And, the work I was doing as a Change Management specialist? It seemed/seems to me (at least at this moment in time) that I need to move away from my former career and devote more time to my passion for coaching and teaching. But, as soon as I set out to do that problems began to arise. Problems that I'm finding are true for my clients and colleagues. I'm going to take a look at a few of mine and theirs. And, talk about what I'm doing, trying to do, and thinking of doing and the advice I'm giving my clients. My hope is this will help you with your challenges. #1 MY PRACTICE IS THRIVING BUT... I've been working with a client who is a therapist to more tightly focus her therapy practice and to help her develop and implement a promotional plan for a new product she's producing. Last fall as a result of her work she began to get really clear about what she wanted to focus on: hypnotherapy for habit disorders. Habit disorders are problems like smoking, over eating, and problems sleeping. With my help, she created a new Yellow Pages ad; designed a new business card; crafted an article on better sleep through hypnotherapy; began contacting other specialists focused on clients with sleep and using her article as an intro; and started looking for organizations where she could give workshops or presentations. Within one month her practice began to shift and blossom. And, now it's doing even better with more and more clients coming for help with sleep, smoking, or overeating challenges but this success has become a problem. Why? Because she's so busy doing therapy that she doesn't have time to design and create her new product or to write the articles she needs to write or to design the workshop .... Well, you get the point. What can she do? Well, let's first look at what won't work. What happens when you get busy at work? Is your first reaction to work longer hours? It's mine! And, certainly seems to be the response of all my corporate clients. But, working harder. Working longer hours only works for a while. Why? Cause time is finite. And, so is energy. As I've discovered, and painfully so, energy quickly depletes. No energy = no work! So, what can you do? Here's the strategy my therapist client and I are going to implement. We're going to move her practice from one-on-one therapy to group coaching/therapy. In our session this week she already designed a 6-week program for weight loss. And, she has a Joint Venture partner in mind (a medical doctor who specializes in weight loss). Now, it's just a matter of designing the transition plan and implementing it. I've decided to do the same thing in my practice. Over the next three months watch for details of my new Creative Career Action Groups. Are you a coach, consultant, or therapist? Think about moving your from one-on-one to a group basis. And, if you're having trouble doing that ASK ME HOW. ======================================================================= WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE? What's your excuse for not doing what you love? This is my challenge. And, the challenge of several people I talked to this week. We're doing something that's enjoyable. Something we went to school to learn how to do. Something that's making us good, even great money. But, it's not what we really, really, really want to do. And, it's getting in the way. So, how do we transition from where we are to where we want to be? Tune into my Blog this week for answers...
