CREATIVE CAREERS UNLEASHED! from Turning Point Strategies and Lyle T. Lachmuth This month I'm going to try something different. I'm going to deliver a shorter ezine to your Inbox each and every Sunday in May! LESS than 900 words, only 4-minutes to read. 3 POWERFUL WAYS TO BUST REAL BARRIERS Remember what I told you last issue? Barriers come in two varieties: Imagined and real. Let's say you have a real barrier. For example, you discover that in order to make any in roads in your new career you need to take some certification training. But, you can't afford it. How do you bust that barrier? ======================================================================= QUOTES "'Where there is a will there is a way,' is an old and true saying. He who resolves upon doing a thing, by that very resolution often scales the barriers to it, and secures its achievement." -- Samuel Smiles (1812 - 1904) Scottish author "Poetry is a search for syllables to shoot at the barriers of the unknown and the unknowable." -- Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967) US poet, biographer ======================================================================= BUST REAL BARRIERS I'm going to use the barrier of being able to afford certification training as way to teach 3 powerful Barrier Busting strategies. Remember: you can use these strategies as a starting place for any 'problem', any barrier. #1 REFRAME IT This is one of my favourite creative, problem-solving strategies. The concept of reframing comes from Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) (see Hot Links). Reframing simply means to change the way you 'see' a problem, to take a different point of view, or to put the problem in a different context. Let's take the 'certification' barrier and see how we might reframe it. Remember the perception of the problem is: "I can't afford [X]", X being the certification training. 1. Simply ask: "Compared to what"? Asking ourselves to compare forces us to look at other options. It opens up the mind and possibilities. 2. Ask: "How do I know [Y]"? Y equals the belief that I can't afford it. This question forces us to examine our underlying arguments, beliefs, or presuppositions. 3. Ask: "How might I afford [X]"? This forces us to look at possible solutions. None of these questions may give THE answer. But, they WILL lead us on a path to an answer. One of the most basic AND most powerful Barrier Busting strategies is to simply start asking questions about the barrier or problem. #2 GET HELP The authors of the book, Real People Real Jobs, asked "Artistic types" to pick out key phrases that best described them. Here are some of those characteristics: creative, complex, emotional, idealistic, prefer working independently. How do those characteristics fit for you? I score 5 out of 5. These characteristics are both my strengths and my weaknesses. For example, I'll look here at just one here (See my Blog for others). Independence: I can go it alone. I have gumption, grit, and determination. BUT, I tend not to ask for help, soon enough. What about you? The most powerful strategy I've employed is to ASK FOR HELP. To keep asking till I get it. And, to ask in multiple places. Oh, yeah, and to LISTEN to the answers. What's the third strategy? ======================================================================= F^R^E^E COACHING! What's getting in the way of your dreams? I'd like to know! Why? I'm writing a career Guidebook for creative, multitalented, independent professionals AKA Artistic-types. And, I want to be sure that I focus on and provide advice on the real challenges facing folks like you. I would like to hear from you. The person who sends me the most responses will receive ONE MONTH of coaching -- ffffreee! Here's your question: What are the 1 or 2 biggest barriers to your living the life of your dreams? It's another of those questions that changes our perception. It takes us to the land of creativity, childhood and pretend. Sometimes the most powerful strategy is to pretend, to act AS IF a barrier wasn't there.
