CREATING A WHOLE LIFE I've just finished reading Norman Jewison's autobiography, "This Terrible Business Has Been Good to Me." Jewison, the 1999 winner of the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award, is the director of such classic films as Moonstruck; The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming; The Hurricane; Fiddler on the Roof; and The Cincinnati Kid. I had enjoyed his movies long before I ever paid attention to who directed them: I've long been more fascinated by the actors, fantasizing of becoming one. Only in recent years have I begun to pay attention to the work the director does. Jewison's story is especially intriguing because his first love was performing, writing, acting -- and, storytelling. Jewison's story is a story about Creating a Whole Life. In the beginning... ======================================================================= QUOTES "The gold will always follow you. Remember that. Just keep working and follow the dictates of your heart. Forget about the money or what's commercial. Well represent you and the gold will always follow because you're talented." -- Norman Jewison quoting famous Hollywood agent Abe Lastfogel "Every man has his own vocation. The talent is the call." -- Emerson ======================================================================= CREATING A WHOLE LIFE - continued Jewison loved performing. It started at age 7 when he would stand on the stage of the school auditorium and enthusiastically recite the poems of Robert Service. As he grew older Jewison, against the wishes of his parents that he pursue a 'normal' life, went on to take a fine arts degree at the University of Toronto with classmates the like of Johnny Wayne and Frank Schuster. He became a member of the Revue and wrote, directed, and performed. After graduating with a BFA he eventually moved into the then new world of television, moving first to the BBC, then back to CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and the chaos of writing and directing live television. Finally, he attracted the attention of CBS and was lured south. After several years directing CBS dramas, the movies called and that's where he spent the remainder of his career. Finally, he moved back home to Canada in 1978 and in 1995 helped establish the Canadian Film Centre to train Canadian actors, writers, and directors. How is his life a model for Creating a Whole Life. Well, here's how I see it (and, maybe how you'll see it when you read the book and I DO encourage you to read it if you are film buff like I am) Let's look at the elements that I believe make up a Whole Life. In no particular order, they are: Talent(s) -- Jewison early on showed talents that clustered around communication: writing, story telling, performing. Talents can be in born, and often are, or can and must be developed through practice and effort. Gift(s) -- How are gifts distinct from talents? The distinction can be pretty fine. But, let me try to illustrate that fine difference. Jewison had a talent for communicating through his writing and performing. But, his real gift, and you know that if you seen his movies, is his gift for storytelling! In particular telling stories that make you think, that examine moral issues. If you don't know the difference between good writing and storytelling go out and read the novels of Diana Gabaldon, a true storyteller, and compare them to those of say Danielle Steele or Nora Roberts. For me gifts are about the unique expression of talents. Mission/Calling -- Why are you here? What are you here to do? Jewison says that he saw his Work as being about telling meaningful stories, stories with a moral, stories that made a point. For example, he used the comedy, "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming", filmed at the height of the cold war (1963), to make a point about détente. Not a popular idea at the time it earned him the label "Canadian Pinko". After that he went on to examine racial tension in the film, "In the Heat of the Night!", which went on to win several Academy Awards. As he himself acknowledges he has to make films that make a point -- even if that point is to have a good laugh. Assets/Skills -- Beyond talents, those raw energies that drive you, are the skills you need to carry you along the way. Jewison grew his skills and developed his assets through his work at CBC, CBS, BBC, and on every movie -- by learning from those around him, even the writers. The Path of the H.E.A.R.T.(TM) -- You need talent, skills, a mission, and gifts but if you don't have a plan, a path to follow, you'll be stuck nowhere with all that talent going to waste. Now, the path doesn't have to be carved in stone or linear. Jewison's, for example, was evolutionary. And, if you're an Artistic-type, yours will be too! You know the elements, now what? ======================================================================= WHAT'S THE SECRET TO REACHING YOUR DREAMS? Got a dream? But, can't seem to make it happen.
