Bill Rudman's "A Christmas Cabaret" Featuring Nancy Maier, Sandra Simon, & Jarel Leal Sunday December 17 7PM SOLD OUT Monday December 18 7PM 3rd Night Added Tuesday December 19 7PM $20 Tune
into WCPN 90.3FM's "Around Noon" with host Dee Perry on Tuesday
December 12th for an interview with Bill RudmanBill Rudman has put together a show with holiday songs covering every decade of the 20th century. Beloved holiday classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and Hugh Martin's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" share the spotlight with such rarities as Jerome Kern's jazz version of "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," a Gershwin holiday song written when the composer was 21, and tunes by Cy Coleman, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn, and even Rodgers and Hammerstein. "This cabaret is a treasure trove," says Rudman, "because just about all the major composers and lyricists who contributed to the Great American Songbook wanted to celebrate the Christmas season. And they did it with great style. Sandy, Jared, Nancy and I can't wait to share these gems with the Nighttown audience." BILL RUDMAN is the artistic director of Musical Theater
Education Programming, whose mission is to foster a deeper
understanding and appreciation of the American musical and the Great
American Songbook by creating programs that educate as well as
entertain people of all ages. His weekly radio program"Footlight
Parade" has been heard for 22 years on WCLV 104.9 FM, and for the past
eight years in national syndication. In addition, he produces and hosts
"On the Aisle" for XM Satellite Radio's all-Broadway Channel 28. Bill
has co-produced a number of jazz albums celebrating classic American
song and featuring such artists as Peggy Lee and Maxine Sullivan (one
of his Sullivan discs was nominated for a Grammy Award). Bill created
and co-hosts (usually with Joe Hunter) the concert series "The Song Is
You!“ a celebration of the Great American Songbook. In 2000 he became
the first recipient of the Robert Bergman Prize for his work in arts
education and community outreach. ![]() NANCY MAIER is well known in the Cleveland area as a music director, vocal coach and accompanist. She spent years in New York City honing her skills in these areas, along with doing nightclub work as a singer-pianist. Nancy is currently music director/coach for the acclaimed musical theater program at Baldwin-Wallace College under the direction of Victoria Bussert, and she is resident music director for Cain Park, where her musical direction has included "A Little Night Music", "Into the Woods", "Big River", "The Music Man", "Side Show", "Goblin Market", "Avenue X", "tick, tick, BOOM!" and the recent "Songs for a New World." She has also music-directed for Great Lakes Theater Festival, Porthouse Theatre, the Cleveland Play House, Beck Center and Karamu House. She married to jazz pianist Dan Maier. ![]() SANDRA SIMON is a favorite with Apollo's Fire and the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra. Sandra can be heard on the Elektra, NPR, and Koch labels. ![]() JAREL LEAL studied voice at the Oberlin and Baldwin-Wallace conservatories; immediately after graduation from B-W, he understudied and performed the lead role of Billy Bigelow in the national-tour revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel." Everybody's
Boppin' audio sample (wma) "Hip doesn't get any hipper, cool doesn't get any cooler and
jazz vocals don't get any more swinging," writes jazz author Will
Friedwald of one of the premier jazz vocal acts of all time, Dave
Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross. "Everybody's Boppin', An Evening
Inspired by Lambert Hendricks & Ross comes to Nighttown for one
night only, Decmeber 26, 2006 at 7 p.m. Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross revolutionized vocal music during the late '50s and early 60's by turning away from the increasingly crossover slant of the pop world to embrace the sheer musicianship inherent in vocal jazz. They merged two traditions: the vocal group and what had become known as "vocalese" --- recreating jazz solos vocally and lyrically, matching the original instrumental lines inflection-for-inflection. Vocalese had been done before, but Lambert, Hendricks & Ross perfected it. Time magazine called them "the James Joyces of Jive" and Downbeat dubbed them "The Hottest New Group In Jazz." Everybody's Boppin' transports you back to the swinging Bop days of New York's Village Vanguard and San Francisco's Hungry i.
Featuring the very capable vocal talents of Bill Hoffman, Gilgamesh
Taggett and Jeannie Tyler, Everybody's Boppin' is an evening
celebrating the jumpin', jivin', swingin' jazz and bebop style of
Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Michael Lytz serves as both musical
director and guitarist with Ed Ridley Jr. on piano, Martin Block on
bass and Roy King on drums. This evening of pure musical pleasure includes such standards as "Moanin'", "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Fever", and "In A Mellow Tone", as well as the LHR standards "Cloudburst", "Twisted", "Gimme That Wine", "Bijou", and "Centerpiece". During the show's successful run at the Cleveland Play House Club, The Plain Dealer's Tony Brown said "all three singers and the talented backing band deserve kudos...Hoffman, Tyler and Taggett do a more than credible job evoking the complex, interwoven, layered harmonies." Don't miss the vocalese treats of Everybody's Boppin' live at Nighttown on Tuesday, December 26th. David Garfield Featuring Eric Marienthal Saturday December 30 8 PM $20 David
Garfield featuring Eric Marienthal "Tok" (mp3)David Garfield Behind every great artist is a team of musicians that work
very hard to uphold the highest of standards. And there is always
a team leader, also known as the musical director. One such
person is pianist David Garfield, who is the M.D. for superstar George
Benson. Garfield routinely plays to packed houses and brings
waves of applause for his artistry. He is always there for George
Benson. It is little wonder that Benson has chosen Garfield. David Garfield brings a wealth of experience to the stage. His career started some 20 odd years ago playing in the bands of Freddie Hubbard, Tom Scott, and Wille Bobo. Since that time he has composed music for television, film, and commercials, formed a long running LA based band that has released four albums, released an award winning record as a tribute to the late drummer Jeff Porcaro, and been a musical director for Dianne Reeves and now Benson. In short David Garfield is the consummate keyboard artist ready to tackle all musical situations. In recent years he has stepped out of the background and developed a successful solo career. In addition to the Tribute record he has released four other CD's including his latest "Giving Back" (2003). That CD released on his own Creatchy record label features an all-star cast including Michael Brecker, Gerald Albright, Airto Morriera, Steve Lukather from Toto, and a cast of premier LA studio musicians.
