"Hearing his new record reminds me of why I fell for this guy in the first place. This album is long overdue and I've never heard him sound better." -- Maria Muldaur

"Geoff has always been one of my favorite singers." -- Bonnie Raitt

geoff1A legend of folk music, Geoff Muldaur is an American original. His distinctive voice and finger picking guitar style are based in deep blues and roots music. Muldaur first came to attention as a member of the famed 60's group, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Another member of that band was his ex wife Maria Muldaur, whose career he helped shape. Muldaur was also a member of blues great Paul Butterfield's Better Days Band
Muldaur is a contemporary of Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt, both of whom he has collaborated with. He represents the best of the folk revival of the 60's and 70's. Much of his repertoire is inspired by old time blues and gospel music. He is both an expert musician and a masterful storyteller.
Over the years he has remained active as a record producer and studio musician. Recently he has recorded two critically acclaimed CD's for High Tone records and has reestablished his performing career. A stellar attraction, he has performed in numerous festivals in Europe and North America and has appeared as a guest on "A Prairie Home Companion".

Don't miss the great Geoff Muldaur at Nighttown on Wednesday, September 27th.

"Duran is a genuine virtuoso"
Stuart Broomer / The Toronto Globe and Mail
"Hilario Duran is an unparalleled pianist, as well as being a composer and arranger of the first order... one of the greatest Stone and Spin Cuban pianists of this 20th Century."
Chucho Valdes
Hilario Duran
hilario5Hilario Dura¡n is one of the top few virtuoso jazz pianists from Cuba.  As one of Cuba's premier exponents of Latin Jazz, Dura¡n is renowned for his piano playing, composing skills, arranging and producing.  Duran started in 1976 as the pianist in the illustrious Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music, in substitution for Chucho Valdes.  When Arturo Sandoval formed his band in 1981, Hilario joined him and worked with him for 10 years, as composer, arranger and producer as well as playing piano and keyboards.   In 1991, Hilario joined Jane Bunnett's group and recorded the Juno Award winning CD "Spirits of Havana".  Along with Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Hilario Duran is ranked among the greats and is one of the most important contemporary Cuban pianists.
In 1990, Duran formed his own group, Perspectiva, which toured successfully throughout Latin America and Europe, and released several musically innovative and critically acclaimed albums, most notably "Tiembla Tierra" and "Buscando Cuerdas".
Now based in Toronto, Ontario, Hilario Duran is currently touring in support of his latest CD "New Danzon".  This CD was awarded a Juno (the Canadian Grammy)  earlier this year.  The CD features Roberto Occhipinti on bass, and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on drums.

Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez
elnegro2On drums will be Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez.  Many consider Hernandez to be the greatest drummer alive and the most formidable drum talent to ever come out of Cuba.  Hernandez has worked with many of the top names in latin, jazz and pop music including Santana, Michel Camilo, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, the Afro-Cuban All-Stars, and many others.  Also appearing with Hilario Duran will be Roberto Occhipinti of Toronto on acoustic bass.  Occhipinti was also the producer of the award winning CD "New Danzon".  He also played with Duran for several years in Jane Bunnett's "Spirits of Havana" group.
Don't miss the great Cuban pianist Hilario Duran along with the great Cuban drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, and the great Candadian bassist Roberto Occhipinti live at Nighttown on Thursday, September 28th.

David Garfield
featuring Alex Ligertwood

Friday September 29th

Audio David Garfield's "The One with The Broken Heart" featuring Alex Ligertwood
Audio David Garfield's "Time Will Tell" featuring Alex Ligertwood

David Garfield
david2Behind every great artist is a team of musicians that work very hard to uphold the highest of standards.  And there is always a team leader, also known as the musical director.  One such person is pianist David Garfield, who is the M.D. for superstar George Benson.  Garfield routinely plays to packed houses and brings waves of applause for his artistry.  He is always there for George Benson.
It is little wonder that Benson has chosen Garfield.  David Garfield brings a wealth of experience to the stage.  His career started some 20 odd years ago playing in the bands of Freddie Hubbard, Tom Scott, and Wille Bobo.  Since that time he has composed music for television, film, and commercials, formed a long running LA based band that has released four albums, released an award winning record as a tribute to the late drummer Jeff Porcaro, and been a musical director for Dianne Reeves and now Benson.  In short David Garfield is the consummate keyboard artist ready to tackle all musical situations.

In recent years he has stepped out of the background and developed a successful solo career.  In addition to the Tribute record he has released four other CD's including his latest "Giving Back" (2003).  That CD released on his own Creatchy record label features an all-star cast including Michael Brecker, Gerald Albright, Airto Morriera, Steve Lukather from Toto, and a cast of premier LA studio musicians.
Alex Lige
His voice is recognized literally the world over as the lead vocalist of Santana and Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. For over 16 years with Carlos Santana, Alex Ligertwood provided his unique sound and interpretation on 12 albums. He earned Gold Records for four of those Santana efforts, and scored Top 40 hits with six albums and/or singles.

There's something deep in the soul of Scotland that produces great blues and R & B singers. Some of music's top vocalists over the years -- from Rod Stewart to Maggie Bell to Alex Ligertwood -- have come out of that musically fertile land.

It didn't take long for others to recognize the Scotsman's natural talents. One of the first to spotlight Alex's big soulful voice was Jeff Beck. He promptly made Alex lead vocalist for the Jeff Beck Band in the early seventies. Next up was a stint with another legendary British band, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. Over the years, Alex recorded several albums with Auger's jazz-rock unit, singing and co-writing with Auger. During the same period, Alex performed and recorded with fellow Scottish soulmates, the Average White Band. His vocal talents have also been featured on the Spyro Gyra album "Dreams Beyond Control", an honor considering that Spyro Gyra is strictly an "instrumental band". Alex has also recorded on albums with Ben E. King, Didier Lockwood, Carly Simon, The Dixie Dregs, Michelle Colombier, Jeff Lorber, Billy Squier and many others.

Joining David Garfield and Alex Ligertwood at Nighttown will  be two of Clevland's  top jazz musicians.  They are Kip Reed on electric bass and Robert Hubbard on drums.  Reed splits his time between Cleveland and New York City.  Reed's credits include work with Tania Maria, Jack McDuff, and recently several appearances at Nighttown with drummer Jamey Haddad.  Robert Hubbard has worked extensively in jazz, R & B, and Gospel music and is regularly tours the national circuits.

Don't miss the virtuoso piano and keyboard work of David Garfield along with the soulful vocals of Alex Ligertwood live at Nighttown on Friday, September 29th.

Greg Abate Quartet
Sunday, October 1st
7 PM
gregGreg Abate is widely considered among jazz writers and aficionados to be one of the "best post bebop alto players" out there today.

In the early 70s, Greg did a two year stint playing lead alto with the Ray Charles Orchestra. For another two years in the mid 1980s, he held the jazz tenor chair in the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under the direction of Dick Johnson. Now, Abate is doing his thing. Bop.

Greg performs throughout the United States,Canada and Europe, 150 plus days a year on the road. When not on the road, he is teaching, composing, arranging, and recording.  Having attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) in 1971, Greg is listed among the schools prominent alumni. He has twelve albums as a leader to his credit; all critically acclaimed. His recordings receive playtime on radio all over the country.

Abate has a very creative notion of where jazz ought to be.  "This is what I do and its what I've been doing," Greg says. "I play real jazz. No frills and no jive."  Greg Abate plays with great passion - very lyrical and swings hard - freewheeling and structured, sweet and throaty, bright and blue. Real jazz.

Joining Greg Abate for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-Star Trio consisting of Cuban pianist Hilario Duran on piano.  Duran has been featured at Nighttown several times leading his trio.  Roberto Occhipinti from Toronto will be on the acoustic bass.  Occhipinti is thought by many to be the best jazz bassist in Canada.  And on drums will be Carmen Intorre from Buffalo.  A graduate of Julliard, Intorre has played Nighttown on several occasions in support of Dominick Farinacci, Ernie Krivda, and Ira Sullivan.

Don't miss the dynamic hard bop saxophonist Greg Abate leading an All-Star Quartet on Sunday, October 1st at Nighttown.

Audio Larry Coryell "No More Booze Minor Blues"
Audio Larry Coryell "The Dragon's Gate"

larryA pioneer of jazz-rock fusion, guitarist Larry Coryell continues to be an innovative presence on the jazz scene today.  Coryell's career is a model of diversity.  In the sixties and seventies his landmark group Eleventh House showcased his rocking electric side.  Since that time he has played acoustic guitar dates, straight ahead dates with a jazz rhythm section, made a Brazilian album, and has recorded and performed classical pieces.  Quite simply Larry Coryell is a guitarist without boundary.  In every category he stands out.

His sound can be heard in many of the top guitarists out there.  He hasmark both influenced and worked with John Scofield, John McLaughlin, and Al DiMeola.  His most recent fusion recording " Tricycles", showcases his guitar alongside his two favorite sidemen Mark Egan on bass and Paul Wertico on Drums.  Just two weeks ago, Larry released a brand new acoustic CD "Laid Back & Blues - Live at The Sky Church in Seattle" on the Rhombus label.  This beautiful new album features a brand new vocalist joining Larry on many dates, Tracey Piergross.

For his performance at Night Town, Coryell will lead a trio featuring Mark Egan on bass.  Egan was a member of Pat Metheny's group during the 1970's and has worked with many major artists including Sting and David Sanborn.  On drums will be Ernie Adams from Chicago.  In recent years Ernie has been a featured member of Ramsey Lewis' group as well as Al DiMeola's group.  On vocals will be Tracey Piergross.

Don't miss the great guitarist Larry Coryell along with the outstanding Mark Egan on bass and Ernie Adams on drums, live at Nighttown on Wednesday, October 4th.

AudioOllabelle's "High on a Mountain"
AudioOllabelle's "See Line Woman"

"Ollabelle came together because of these musicians' love of this music, without thought of success or career or any of the other trappings of the modern professional music business. It has great value to our culture, adding new life to a tradition that is an important part of who we are. But mostly, they sound great. They sing great and they play great, and they are wonderful people."
-T Bone Burnett

Ollabelle is:

Amy Helm要ocals, mandola
Byron Isaacs要ocals, bass, dobro
Tony Leone要ocals, drums, percussion
Fiona McBain要ocals, acoustic and electric guitars
Glenn Patscha要ocals, keyboards, accordion

"A collection of songs of hard times, loss, compassion and hope" is how Fiona McBain describes Riverside Battle Songs, Ollabelle's second album and Verve Forecast debut.  The 13-song set finds the New York quintet building upon the foundation of its self-titled 2004 debut, drawing from a deep well of gospel, blues, bluegrass, and country influences to create timelessly resonant music that honors the integrity of its sources while remaining effortlessly contemporary.

A multitalented, democratic collective whose participants share vocal and songwriting duties, Ollabelle gains strength from its members' shared sense of mission, as well as their diverse musical and personal backgrounds.  Although the group initially began as a casual sideline to the musicians' individual projects, it quickly evolved into a fulltime creative entity with an unmistakable life of its own.

ollabell2Where Ollabelle's gospel-steeped debut album emphasized distinctive adaptations of traditional material, Riverside Battle Songs 'produced by veteran producer/multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, best known for his lengthy stint in Bob Dylan's band, and mixed by longtime admirer T Bone Burnett, showcases the group's own compositions.  Such memorable originals as "Heaven's Pearls," "Fall Back," "Dream the Fall," "Blue Northern Lights" and "Reach for Love" offer subtly riveting examples of the bandmates' vocal and instrumental interplay, mining an evocative palette of acoustic and electric textures to create singularly expressive music.

Another highlight is a haunting reworking of the bluegrass standard "High On A Mountain, a song written by the band's namesake, legendary rural songstress Ola Belle Reed, a key inspiration in their formative days.  The group also brings fresh perspective to the traditional classic "Riverside" (aka "Down by the Riverside"), whose message of hope and redemption serves as the album's thematic centerpiece.

Riverside Battle Songs' compelling songcraft and organic performances demonstrate the potent musical and personal rapport that continues to fuel Ollabelle's creative process.  The group originally grew out of an informal assemblage of singers and players who came together to play traditional gospel songs at a weekly jam at the East Village bar 9C.  That event became a welcome source of positivity amidst the darkness that hung over downtown Manhattan in the months following September 11, 2001.

ollabelle3All five Ollabelle members had come from varied backgrounds and geographical locations to make music in New York City, and had crossed paths or worked together in various combinations.  Woodstock-bred Amy Helm came had a long history singing in blues combos.  Byron Isaacs had worked as bassist with a variety of artists while pursuing his own songwriting efforts.  Tony Leone had an extensive resume as a jazz drummer.  Fiona McBain had moved to New York from Sydney, Australia and had begun to win attention as a solo singer/songwriter.  Canadian-born Glenn Patscha had long been active in the New Orleans music scene.

Like its predecessor, Riverside Battle Songs eschews extraneous production frills in favor of spare arrangements that showcase the substance of the band's vocal and instrumental interaction.  The album's birth cycle began in November 2004, when the quintet retreated to Woodstock to work on new material, living and writing communally in a rented house and cutting rough demos in a studio-equipped barn owned by Amy's father, legendary singer/drummer Levon Helm of The Band

"The gestation period for this record has been so long that we can't wait to go out and play these songs," McBain enthuses.  "If there's one thing I've learned about this band, it's that it continues to grow in its own unpredictable direction, and we're eager to get out and share that with people."

Don't miss the roots based sounds of Ollabelle, one of the best new bands to come along in years, live at Nighttown on Thursday, October 5th.
