Jackie Warren Latin Jazz Quartet Sunday June 4 7PM $10 Jackie
Warren's "Black Orpheus" Jackie
Warren's "Nardis" Jackie Warren is one of the most in demand and prolific jazz
artists
working in the Great Lakes region. On any given night she can be
found playing solo, leading her trio, or she may be heard as the
featured soloist and arranger for Sammy DeLeon's Salsa and Latin-Jazz
ensemble. Jackie is also a professor of music at Tri-C and has several
private students. Jackie gets calls constantly from
vocalists who want her to back them, and she is frequently called on to
guest with national artists. In the past few years Jackie has
performed with David "Fathead" Newman, Bobby Watson, Jane Bunnett, and
Gerald Wilson. Her arrangements can be heard on Sammy
DeLeon's new CD, and recently she recorded a session in collaboration
with the legendary producer Tommy LiPuma. So it is not a surprise to see that Jackie has finally
released her
long awaited solo CD "Near You". This gem
is an all solo
CD. It showcases her skills as an interpreter of jazz classics
and as a composer. Fans of jazz throughout the area, and regulars
at Nighttown know they can always count on Jackie Warren to provide
them with an artistic and entertaining experience. Jackie is one of the most in-demand latin keyboard players around. For this event at Nighttown, Jackie will be featuring her own latin group. Don't miss one of NE Ohio's premier painist Jackie Warren at Nighttown on Sunday June 4th. Freddy Cole Tuesday June 6 and Wednesday June 7 2 shows each night at 7PM & 9PM $25 Freddy Cole's "I'm Not My
Brother, I'm Me“He’s one of the few male jazz singers these days who is still at the height of his powers and can be taken seriously.” Ben Ratliff / The New York Times “If you quiet your thoughts and really listen, Freddy Cole will open the door to your heart with a key you did not even know existed.” Ruth Brown / Blues Singer “Freddy Cole just might be the most attractively understated jazz singer currently at work.” Lloyd Sachs / Chicago Sun-Times Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat “King” Cole, will
stir up
memories that will never be forgotten. Performing professionally
for over 40 years, this great singer and pianist has developed a huge
following of his own. The instantly recognizable Cole voice and a
veteran quartet, play the classics as well as new compositions and
interpretations from a huge repertoire.Lionel Frederick Cole was born on October 15, 1931, the youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole’s five children. His three elder brothers, Eddie, Ike and Nat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “I started playing piano at five or six,” Freddy remembers. “Music was all around me.” In the Chicago home of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Cole moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at the Juillard School of Music and found himself profoundly influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. He received a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the road as a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny Golson. It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues to flourish to this day. He developed a vast repertoire of songs in Manhattan bistros and concurrently began to supplement his live performances with television and radio commercial jingle work. Cole doesn’t apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat
“King” Cole.
There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings,
and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his
voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the
awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far
closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his
brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals – suave,
elegant, formidable and articulate – are among the most respected in
jazz. Freddy's latest album, "This Love of Mine" on the popular jazz label High Note, was in the top 10 of the Jazz Charts for over 10 weeks this past year. Don't miss this legendary singer with the legendary voice, when he makes a special appearance at Nighttown on Tuesday June 6th and Wednesday June 7th. Grupo Brasil featuring Maggie Green Friday June 9 9PM $10 Maggie
Green's "Chega de Saudada" Grupo Brasil was created by New York native Kip Reed, who
has recorded
and toured extensively with major jazz and Brazilian recording artists
including Tania Maria, Leny Andrade, Bebel Gilberto, Ivan Lins, Paulo
Braga, and many others. Yearning to fill the void that existed in
Cleveland for Brazilian music, Kip tapped the talents of his longtime
friend and guitarist Gary Aprile, to join him in forming Grupo
Brasil. Together they are bringing to light the Brazilian
songbook of the great composers Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton
Nascimento, Joao Gilberto, Djavan, Dori Caymmi, Ivan Lins, and
others. The band has already made a splash with performances at
the Blossom Music Center, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the
Shaker Square Arts Festival. A stunning beauty with a professional training in both jazz and opera, Maggie Green has been a strong presence on the Ohio jazz scene since graduating from Boston's Berklee School of Music in 2000. She enjoys a firm command of the great American songbook and is well versed in world music especially the music of Brazil. Unlike most vocalists whose interest in Brazil is limited to adding a Jobim tune or two to their repertoire, Green has made an active study of the language and speaks and sings in Portugese. She has an extensive Brazilian repertoire that has increased through her work with her own group Poetico Canto and as a member of Cleveland based Grupo Brasil. And she has just finished her first tour of Brazil where she was warmly received in May of last year. Skeets Ross Trio Sunday June 11 7PM $10 The jazz tradition enjoys a
great history in the Cleveland area. One of the primary carriers
of the flame for the past 60 years is pianist Skeets Ross. At 78,
Ross is still entertaining people five nights a week as the resident
pianist at the historic Renaissance Hotel in downtown Cleveland.
Ross' career scans much of Cleveland's history and jazz history as
well. Now after all these years, Ross has finally put down some
tracks for posterity. His new CD "The Skeets Ross Trio"
successfully captures his artistry and that of his band members. And he
has an all-star group that features another Cleveland jazz legend Lamar
Gaines on acoustic bass, and the first class drummer Ralph
Jackson. Collectively this group has well over 100 years of
professional jazz experience and have been an inspiration to
generations of younger musicians and jazz fans throughout the
area. Skeets Ross has multiple performance credits including appearances at Severance Hall, Cleveland State University, Tri-C, The Cleveland Playhouse, and major clubs and concert halls throughout the region. Lamar Gaines has backed several major stars including Erroll Garner, Teddy Wilson, Sonny Stitt, Milt Jackson, and Roland Kirk. Ralph Jackson, a prolific drummer, is a long time member of the Duke Jenkins Trio and has worked with many big names over the years including Kenny Burrell, Joe Alexander, Bill Hardman, and Ace Carter. in both French and English. Ilona Knopfler posseses a firm
command of the jazz repertory, but has also been compared to popular
vocalists like Bonnie Raitt, Dianne Schuur, and Diana Krall. Her
approach is both sophisticated and approachable. Keep an eye out
for Ilona Knopfler, she is going places and fast.Jamey Haddad A world class musician, native Clevelander Jamey Haddad has
spent most
of last year on tour with Simon and Garfunkel enhancing their world
famous music with his percussion. That tour included an appearance in
downtown Cleveland at Gund Arena. Jamey Haddad has been a professional
jazz musician for over 25 years and has enjoyed a wide and diverse
career. He has toured and recorded with many greats including Carly
Simon, Joe Lovano, Paul Winter, Kenny Werner, and Dave Liebman. Jamey
Haddad wears many hats.... he is a great jazz drummer, he has invented
and patented several percussion instruments, and he has performed
worldwide with musicians spanning four different continents. An author
and lecturer, he is considered an authority on musical cultures and
their rhythmic base. Allan Mallet Allan Mallet is a highly sought after pianist and keyboard wizard based in New York City. Kip Reed Currently splitting his time between New York and Cleveland,
electric
bassist Kip Reed has worked with several major artists. They

was revived in the ' 60s and continues today. Book Binder's
stories are as good as the songs. The Sydney Morning Herald said,
"behind the humor lurks a musical master."Currently Roy Book Binder is touring in support of his latest CD "Live at The Fur Peace Station" which was recorded at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio. legendary records during that time. His relationship with Hermeto
Pascoal continues as his mentor figures prominently in his recent
recordings. Since
moving to Seattle in 1992, Jovino Santos Neto has continued to tour the
world and record prolifically. From 1993-1997 he was a prominent
member of Flora Purim's and Airto Moreira's Fourth World. In
addition he has recorded multiple CD's with his Seattle group, made a
masterful CD with Mandolinist Mike Marshall, and recently returned to
his native Rio De Janeiro to record his latest CD "Roda Carioca (Rio
Circle)" with an all Brazilian All-Star lineup with special guests
Joyce on vocals, and Hermeto Pascoal on multiple instruments, and

Grammy nominated disc Alma de Santiago. In addition, Roberto toured
with Juno award winning group NOJO, performing at Canadian jazz
festivals with the legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers. Roberto has
recorded 3 albums with Cuban piano virtuoso Hilario Duran including
2005 Juno award winning Album New Danzon which he produced and
performed. Roberto continues this musical partnership with upcoming
performances in the US and Canada.Other recording projects include, a Juno nominated disc City of Neighborhoods with NOJO and Sam Rivers, a quintet recording with drummer Marty Morell and a new disc for his nonet following on the success of THE CUSP featuring his own compositions for a larger jazz ensemble. As producer, he's currently working on projects for the Gryphon Trio, Shurum Burum Jazz Circus, Quartetto Gelato, Soul Stew and Hilario Durán's next album, recorded in Havana. Roberto Occhipinti has worked with Jovino Santos Neto on several occasions and features the pianists compositions on his new CD "Yemaya" (2006, Alma Records). The Frank & Joe Show Featuring Frank Vignola and Joe Ascione Thursday June 22 8PM $20 Frank
& Joe's "Long Train Running"Frank, when pronouncing his musical intentions at age 6, was gifted with his grandmother's vintage D'Angelico New Yorker guitar as well as records by Les Paul, and Bucky Pizzarelli, not to mention a stack of Django Reinhardt 48s he would quickly master. Frank also laid claim to the banjo and was crowned the Grand National Banjo Champion of Canada at 13 years old. From early on his influences were diverse, ranging from Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass and Les Paul to Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Bach. While still in his teens, Vignola was regarded as one of the top musicians in New York. He's been a bandleader with Concord Jazz, Acoustic Disc and Nagel-Heyer and spent many years as Les Pauls trusty side as well as guitar slinger in Mark O'Connors Hot Trio. Four year old Baby Joe pounded his mama's pots and p ans with
astounding purpose and rhythmic sensibility, budding into a dazzling
polyrhythmic percussionist by his teens. Counting Gene Krupa, Philly
Joe Jones and Buddy Rich among his greatest influences (having served
as a roadie for the latter in his teenage years), Ascione has toured
the world and appeared on over 60 albums as a sideman, in the process
becoming one of the most in-demand drummers in the business. He is also
an established bandleader and has 2 critically lauded solo albums under
his belt. He's held it down with everyone from Donald Fagen, & Cab
Calloway to Noel Redding. By the time most kids are deciding on prom dates, Frank and Joe were ensconced in a musical world of idols and legends. They quickly became seasoned studio and touring artists, playing with everyone from Madonna and Ringo Starr to Chet Atkins and Donald Fagen. Frank and Joe, as separate entities, found themselves in demand, but something was missing musically. Frank
and Joe's first meeting was typical. Frank's drummer couldn't make a
scheduled show and called Joe to fill in. This chance meeting created
what would later be called THE FRANK AND JOE SHOW. A group so diverse
in its musical influences, a fresh sound was inevitable. The pair was
signed to Hyena Records and released their first CD 33 1/3 in 2004,
followed by its bookend, 66 2/3 in 2005, both produced by the legendary
Joel Dorn. Currently Frank Vignola and Joe Ascione are touring with their four piece group in support of their latest CD "Submarine Bus". Don't miss the incredible Frank and Joe Show when they make their way to Nighttown on Thursday, June 22nd at Nighttown. Incidentally Frank Vignola and Joe Ascione played the first JWP concert at Nighttown seven years ago in June of 1999. They have played Nighttown every year since that time and we are glad to have them as part of the Nighttown family. Bobby Selvaggio Friday June 23 9PM $10 Bobby Selvaggio's
"Julian's Way" Bobby Selvaggio's
"The Path" Born in
Cleveland, Ohio in June of 1969, Bobby Selvaggio is the son of local
jazz legend Pete Selvaggio. The youngest of three brothers, Bobby was
exposed to jazz at an early age and is now considered one of the most
innovative musicians to come out of Cleveland in years.Bobby grew up watching his father teaching and practicing during the day and playing and hanging until the wee hours of the morning. The family was fortunate to see his dad play with some of the jazz greats, including Guy Lombardo. By his 11th birthday, Bobby couldn't deny his attraction to jazz any longer. He decided that the alto sax was his instrument of choice. Bobby cites Cannonball Adderley as one of the strongest influences to help guide his decision. Bobby started to gig regularly after high school graduation and attended Kent State University for his undergraduate degree in Music Performance. Bobby immersed himself in his passions and dedicated himself to jazz fulltime. He joined the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and received several regional and state awards for performance at various competitions. Bobby also began teaching both high school and college students. Today, he maintains a staple of private students along with his permanent position as Director of Jazz Studies at Muskingum College. ![]() In 1992, Bobby received a scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music where he earned his masters in Jazz Performance. The four years spent in New York changed his life forever. Living and learning in arguably the best jazz environment in the world, Bobby's New York experience went a long way to solidify his raw talent. He studied and worked with some of the greatest musicians recording today - Dick Oatts, Bobby Watson and Ryan Kisor. He worked with the Village Vanguard Orchestra and gigged at the great jazz clubs including the Vanguard and Birdland. Now living in Cleveland with his wife Chelsea and son Julian, Bobby continues to work on new projects. In 1999, he released his debut CD, "First Steps" to critical acclaim. Leading the rhythm section on the disc is Dan Wall/piano, Matt Perko/Drums and Gary Hoopengardener/Bass. In 2001, Bobby completed his second solo album, entitled "Round", featuring Cleveland musicians Mike Murray on piano, Aidan Plank on bass, and Matt Perko on drums. Bobby also has composed and arranged more than 200 original pieces for various groups. His octet, Red Rhinoceros, has featured his signature style - filled with diverse, intricate melodies and syncopations. His music is original, open and refreshing. Appearing with Bobby Selvaggio at Nighttown will be pianist Dan Murphy, acoustic bassist Chris Mees, and drummer Matt Perko. Don't miss the rising star saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio at Nighttown on Friday, June 23rd. Erin Bode Thursday June 29 8PM $15 Erin Bode's "Holiday"
Erin Bode's "Over
and Over" In recent years there has been plenty of speculation about
which vocalists will rise up and compete with the incredible success
that has visited Norah Jones. A leading candidate is St. Louis
vocalist Erin Bode. Bode is similar to Jones in several
respects. She is not a pure jazz singer, but she is more closely
linked to jazz than any other genre. While she is quite capable
with standards, she really shines the most with her original
material. And finally and most importantly her music has
plenty of heart; something that both jazz fans and pop music fans are
eager for. Bode has just released her second CD for the MaxJazz label, which is also based in St. Louis. Whereas her first CD featured several well known New York musicians and covered time honored standards and pop material, her new CD is undoubtedly a more accurate portrait. It features her hometown band and with the exception of Paul Simon's wonderful "Graceland", it features all original material that she has written along with her pianist Adam Maness. In her younger years Erin Bode was involved in several musical productions and also studied opera for a brief time. Her voice is confident and warm and communicates beautifully. She combines the originality of the best of singer/songwriters with her versatile band who are all obviously first rank jazz
musicians. Bode has already achieved considerable success after releasing her first CD playing
at several major jazz clubs, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and
toured Europe last summer. With an ever better second CD, her
career is clearly on the upswing.Currently on tour to support her new CD "Over and Over", Erin Bode will be backed by her terrific group consisting of Adam Maness on piano and guitar, Syd Rodway on bass, and Chris Higginbottom on drums. These are all the same musicians featured on the new CD. This CD is enjoying particuliar success having reached the top 25 on the Billboard Jazz Chart which is based on nationwide sales. This is Erin's second appearance at Nighttown. She was received warmly at Nighttown in early March right after the new CD came out. Don't miss the charming and talented vocalist and songwriter, Erin Bode, Live at Nighttown on Thursday, June 29th.
