- Ben Ratliff, New York Times

Cuban pianist and composer, Omar Sosa makes his Cleveland debut at Nighttown on November 12th with his sextet, celebrating the recording Eggun, his homage to Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.  The project was a commission by the Barcelona Jazz Festival in 2009, honoring the 50th anniversary of Davis' recording.  The music is a blend of musical elements and motifs from Kind of Blue and the spirit of Mother Africa.

Born in Camaguey Cuba, the 47 year old composer completed his formal education at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana.  In 1993, while a member of the group Irakere, Sosa moved to Ecuador and immersed himself in the folkloric traditions of Esmeraldes, the Northwest coastal region with a heavy African heritage.  His collaborations with musicians from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia include Mino Cinelu, John Santos, Carlos "Patato" Valdés, Marta Galarraga, Paquito D'Rivera, Mark Weinstein, and dozens more.  He is a six time Grammy nominee and has received numerous awards and grants.  Joining Omar for this tour are his recording mates, bassist/percussionist, Childo Tomas, drummer, Marque Gilmore, trumpeter, Joo Kraus, tenor saxophonist, Peter Apfelbaum and alto saxophonist, Leandro Saint-Hill.

ALASH ENSEMBLE

The Alash Ensemble, a Trio of Tuvan Throat Singers bring their unique and sensational art to the Nighttown Stage!

Alash Ensemble is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. The ancient art of throat singing (xöömei) developed among the nomadic herdsmen of this region. Alash remains grounded in this tradition while expanding its musical vocabulary with new ideas from the West.

All members of Alash were trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood, first learning from their families, and later becoming students of master throat singers. In 1999, as students at Kyzyl Arts College, they formed a group called Changy-Xaya. They practiced in the damp college basement on Kochetovo Street, and soon became the resident traditional ensemble on campus. At the same time they learned about western music, practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments, and listened to new trends coming out of America. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues), they began to forge a new musical identity. They introduced the guitar and sometimes even the Russian bayan (accordion) into their arrangements, alongside their traditional Tuvan instruments. They experimented with new harmonies and song structures. The effect is an intriguing mixture of old and new.

The musicians are inspired by the music of their grandparents, great-grandparents, and the great musicians of Tuva and Central Asia. At the same time they are influenced by such western artists as Sun Ra and Jimi Hendrix. Yet the Alash musicians never sacrifice the integrity of their heritage in an effort to make their music more hip for an American audience. Rather they look for contemporary ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music.

Join us for an exciting night of world music forged with western influences when Alash debuts at Nighttown on Wednesday November 13th.

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Luca Mundaca is the latest in a long line of great Brazilian artists who have gained international acclaim.  Luca is from a small town just south of Sao Paolo.  From her early teens on, she has been fine tuning her musical gifts.  Early on she quickly mastered the standard Bossa Nova repertoire and she became adept at interpreting the work of the masters.

Luca Mundaca’s new album Primeiro, features all original compositions

Luca won 2008 Independent Music Award in the World fusion category. Celebrate the holidays!  Legendary vocalist, pianist, & Nat's Brother, with his Grammy Nominated Quartet!  Featuring: Freddy Cole-vocals & piano, Randy Napoleon-guitar, Elias Bailey-acoustic bass, & Curtis Boyd-drums.

Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat Cole, will stir up memories that will never be forgotten.  Now in his 50th year of performing, this great singer and pianist has developed a huge following of his own.  The instantly recognizable Cole voice and a veteran quartet, play the classics as well as new compositions and interpretations from a huge repertoire.

Lionel Frederick Cole was the youngest of five children. His three elder brothers, Eddie, Ike and Nat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “Music was all around me.” In the Chicago home of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Cole moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at the Juillard School of Music and found himself profoundly influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson.  He received a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the road as a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny Golson.

It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues to flourish to this day. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings, and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother.  His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable and articulate - are among the most respected in jazz.

A don't miss concert for the holidays!

Legendary Contemporary Jazz Keyboard Artist leads All-Star Lineup at Nighttown!  Featuring: Jimmy Haslip-electric bass, Patrick Lamb-sax, & Poogie Bell-drums.

By the late 1970s, trailblazing keyboardist Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion – a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. The Jeff Lorber Fusion first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a  international audience.

In subsequent years, Lorber dropped the term “fusion” from his billing as the movement evolved into what is currently known as contemporary jazz. Still, he continued to explore the innovative, improvisational potential of grafting other musical forms to the jazz idiom.

Jeff's new recording, Hacienda, on Heads Up International / Concord, revisits a sound he helped pioneer. The album takes the experiment that he started with his GRAMMY-nominated CD, Now is the Time, and his 2012 album, Galaxy, up a notch with 11 exciting and energetic new compositions. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist/composer Jimmy Haslip, Hacienda also features saxophonist Eric Marienthal.

Jimmy Haslip on bass is best known for his years as one of the leaders of the famous fusion group Yellowjackets.  Jimmy has two solo albums and has numerous credits with other top artists including Allan Holdsworth, Alan Pasqua, Chad Wakerman, Bruce Hornsby, Donald Fagen, Al Jarreau and many more.

Poogie Bell on drums has five solo albums out and numerous credits with the likes of Marcus Miller, Erykah Badu, Victor Bailey, David Bowie, Stanley Clarke, Randy Crawford, and Roberta Flack.  He resides in our neighbor city Pittsburgh.

Don't miss the super-star group Jeff Lorber when they tear it up on the Nighttown stage Friday November 22nd.

Jacob Bergson is a pianist and keyboardist who grew up in Cleveland Heights. He was an active player in the local jazz scene, until 2008 when he relocated to Brooklyn, New York. There his initial love for jazz and the acoustic piano morphed into a fascination with electronic music and synthesis. During his time in New York he has found work as an engineer and producer as well as a keyboardist. Jacob has worked, in various capacities, with many artists and across numerous genres, including Christina Aguilera, Diiv, Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing), and Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic). Jacob is a graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan.

New Orleans Saxophonist Donald Harrison, and original NYC drummer Mike Clark Co-Lead All-Star Organ Quartet live at Nighttown!  Featuring: Wil Blades-Hammond B-3 Organ, & Dan Wilson-guitar.

Donald Harrison

Emerging from the talent-laden New Orleans jazz scene in the 1980’s along with Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick, Jr., and Terrence Blanchard, Donald Harrison has established himself as the preeminent alto saxophonist of the post-bop generation.
After recording and performance stint’s with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Ellis Marsalis, Roy Haynes, Jack McDuff, Larry Coryell, Eddie Palmeieri, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Lenny White, and Tony Williams, Donald Harrison broke out with a number of trend setting albums in the late-80’s that included fellow Jazz Messenger Terrence Blanchard.

Now with over two dozen albums under his belt, Donald has solidified his role as the leading alto sax player in jazz today.

Mike Clark

Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s Thrust album, which garnered him an international cult following.

While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk”, Mike considers himself a jazz drummer, and in fact has become one of the most vital to sit behind a set. He's performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, and dozens more.

Don't miss this super exciting all-star quartet at Nighttown on Saturday December 21st.

NYC based drummer & Ohio Native leads All-Star Quintet for Holiday Jazz Celebration!
Featuring: Chris Hemingway-Sax; Benny Benack III- Trumpet; Alton Merell- Piano; Christian Dillingham-Bass; Chris Massey-Drums.

Chris Massey is making a name for himself as a new breed of young talented player in the world of jazz. JazzTimes Magazine heralds him as "A powerhouse drummer-bandleader in the tradition of Art Blakey and Jeff "Tain" Watts".Growing up in Northeast Ohio where he picked up his first pair of drumsticks at the age of nine he took his first steps into his musical career as a Jazz Performance major at Youngstown State University in 2000. Chris above all else is a modern drummer taught in the old tradition of swing; his ethos is to "put his sound" underneath a player and let the fire start to spread. Chris is residing in the New York City area and performing with/leading his modern jazz group "The Nue Jazz Project". His debut album "Vibrainium" which has been critically acclaimed by numerous publications such as Downbeat Magazine, JazzTimes, AllaboutJazz and many others is available through the Spectra Jazz record label (www.spectrajazz.com) Chris' latest album, "Whosoever" features Adam Larson (Tenor Sax), Benny Benack III (Trumpet), Willerm Delisfort (Piano), and Chris Talio (Bass) and was released in January of 2013 on Power Cosmic Records.

Dynamic Vocalist and her Trio celebrate the Holidays on the Nighttown Stage!

Endowed with the kind of liquid phrasing and sheer wisdom that comes from depth of experience on the jazz performance campaign trail, Vanessa Rubin is an ever-evolving classic singer in the making.  The development of a true jazz singer is a long-range prospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into a true instrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys and perils; such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire.  Capable of employing the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper to shout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to up tempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.

One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; the relationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust.  Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails.  From the time she joined the New York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of such grandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has been universal.  Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around a song, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing that music.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is quite impressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, Billy Higgins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and James Williams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms. Rubin’s artistry.  More recently she has completed auspicious global tours with Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

Don't miss the hugely popular and sultry vocalist Vanessa Rubin on Monday December 30th.
