Four CD’s are available at: www.amazon.com and www.cdbaby.com/dreneivy2 http://www.dreneivy.com/ Paul Samuels Paul Samuels grew
up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Both his father, a
violinist (Cleveland Orchestra), and mother who designs and creates
visual art, were supportive of Pauls interest in playing music. As a
young teenager, Paul's father took him to concerts performed by McCoy
Tyner, Tony Williams, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughn.
These jazz innovators inspired Paul to become a performing artist and
drummer. Starting his professional music career at age 14, Samuels studied with percussionist, Robert Matson (The Cleveland Orchestra) and drummer, Bob McKee. Honing his skills, Paul played drums in and around the Cleveland area and was influenced by local musicians Lawrence Jacktown Jackson, Greg Bandy, Lamar Gaines, Bill DeArango, Jamey Haddad, Val Kent, Skip Hadden, Ace Carter, and Neal Creque. When it comes to the music Samuels feels, "it is important to keep one foot in the past and one foot in the future". In 1975 he set his sights on moving forward, and checking out the New York music scene. While he learned from the up and coming musicians of his generation, it was drummer Billy Hart who influenced Paul's musical direction. Developing his skills, Samuels earned his respect as a fine accompanist. In the mid 80s Samuels recorded three albums with Greg Osby and his compositions, Excuse Not and Eyewitness appear on Osbys Mind Games and Season of Renewal recordings (JMT). Samuels said Osby encouraged him to keep an open mind and move forward with the music. Samuels has recorded, performed or toured internationally with a variety of musicians such as James Moody, David Fathead Newman, Lonnie Plaxico, Hank Crawford, Pat The Kid Martino, Jack McDuff, and popular rhythm and blues artist Gerald Levert. Respected by his peers, and performing for more than three decades, Paul says, he is "still a work in progress". The man's journey continues through music. Expressive in his touch, with sensitivity to sound, Samuels' sophisticated drum style is a testament to his love for the art of music. Paul devotes his time to teaching for the Jazz Studies Program at Oberlin College, in Ohio. Samuels debut CD, called Speak, features Greg Osby on saxophone, Dan Wall on organ and Jamie Haddad on percussion, and he endorses Bosphorus Cymbals. Hungry First Monday Monday June 1 Nighttown will donate $5 from every meal. WJCU interviewed
Brendan Ring on how he started the Hungry First Monday program and how
we did the first month. Click
here to hear the radio
broadcast. On Monday, June 1, Nighttown restaurant will donate $5 from
every meal
served at the restaurant on the first Monday of each month to Harvest
for Hunger and the Cleveland Foodbank. This “Hungry First Monday”
promotion will continue throughout the year on the first Monday of
every month.“We are going through extraordinary times and those who have should help out those who have not. Giving up a little of our profit just seems like the right thing to do,” said Brendan Ring, owner of Nighttown, who estimated that the 9 month “Hungry First Monday” promotion could net as much as $15,000 “if people come out in droves”. When asked where this idea came from, he said, “I recently read an article in the New York Times that said ‘working-class people who suddenly lose jobs or homes often find themselves at sea, unsure how to navigate the system or ashamed to seek help. We must all step up to the plate,” said Ring, who became an American citizen last summer. Nighttown’s business neighbors are also chipping in. The Cedar Fairmount Merchants have decided to join Nighttown in donating to the Cleveland Food Bank. As of this press release, the following businesses will donate $1.00 for every sale over $10.00 on the first Monday or first Tuesday of each month. (some are closed on Mondays): Zoss The Swiss Baker, Appletree Books, Abstract Hair Design, C.L. Barber Salon and Hang It Up Archival Framing, Cedar Hill Salo . Other shops are expected to soon join in. “As the need for food continues to increase in our area, a promotion like this is a wonderful, grass-roots effort to get the community involved." said Anne Goodman, Executive Director of Cleveland Foodbank. "Hunger is a serious and urgent problem in our community. Thankfully, kindness and compassion are hallmarks of Greater Clevelanders.” All Hungry Monday donations will go to Harvest for Hunger, an annual, 21-county food and funds drive that takes place each March and is organized by the Cleveland Foodbank. The Foodbank provides food and critical nonfood products to local nonprofit agencies which serve hungry individuals across northeast Ohio. For more information, visit www.clevelandfoodbank.org. Join us on Monday June 1 and subsequent first Mondays of each month through the end of the year for "Hungry First Monday" at Nighttown.
Direct From Ireland Moya Brennan Wednesday, June 3 7 & 9 PM $25. Hear
Moya Brennan Timeless, elemental and carried
heavenwards in soulful breath, Moya's voice reaches out to the farthest
places but still touches the soul. She sings with an angel's voice,
arousing a passion in every listener. Her music refreshes and heals,
exciting the senses, bringing a sense of calm to tired hearts. Always fresh, forever just a dream away Moya captures the essence of her homeland in all its cascading beauty, mystery and contradictions. Yet she sings from the heart to a world where hope, faith and joy are not just a dream. Yes, it all makes sense and there are elements of these qualities in many of the world's great singers. Yet it is astounding that her voice goes from strength to strength. She stands as an Irish icon with the world as her stage. In her music making, Moya has never been content to nestle within comfortable boundaries. From an early age she trod the boards with her father Leo in the dance halls, then became fixated with the likes of Joni Mitchell and the Beach Boys before going on to share, with her band Clannad, an enlightening discovery of the extraordinary wealth of Celtic history and melody on her doorstep. Clannad sent tremors through the world of traditional music. With Harry's Game they took the Irish language and its melodies to places that it had never been before. Top of the Pops, major record contracts and world tours. The accolades followed -Ivor Novello and BAFTA awards plus, after several nominations, a Grammy award in 1999. Their music was fresh, vibrant and progressive. Alongside all of this, Moya has developed an individuality which has already shown itself in her expanding body of work. When an artist's career can often be measured in months, hers spans decades. Through this clamorous journey, through school halls, folk clubs, festivals, discos, churches, the world's most renowned concert halls she has travelled purposefully and always focused. The power of her whispered tones and the beauty of her music touch the soul. Gently, yet persistently, her songs and her music are redefining Irish music. Vermeer Quartet and many symphony orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. He
has performed all of the major guitar concertos, is an active
transcriber of baroque as well as South American music and has had
numerous modern works dedicated to him. Born in 1963 to Pakistani father and Chilean mother, extensive travels, especially long stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan and Chile, exposed Haque to different musics from a very early age. This natural eclecticism has become the hallmark of Fareed's music. The 1981 Recipient of North Texas State University's Jazz Guitar Scholarship, Haque spent a year studying with renowned jazz guitarist and pedagogue Jack Peterson. Fareed's growing interest in the classical guitar led him to transfer to Northwestern University, where he completed his studies in classical guitar under David Buch, John Holmquist and Anne Waller. to many forms of Tambura music from the Balkans and its Gypsies. In his
teens, Kruno took up the guitar and studied rock and blues throughout
his high school years, honing his technical prowess and improvisational
abilities. It was not until studying music at University that Kruno was

understanding of the gypsy jazz idiom. In January of 2002, Kruno moved
