- Making the Wrong Decision -

I've been hearing lots of advice this week for kids getting their exam results - and this piece of advice got me steaming: "the last thing you want to do is make the wrong decision". Grrr. Talk about putting enormous pressure on people. There is No Such Thing as a wrong decision.

The reason this particular piece of advice makes my teeth itch is that it causes paralysis. How can you make a decision (or follow the decision that has already been made) when you are afraid of cocking up? Far too many people do nothing because they are afraid of making the wrong decision. The last thing you want to do is stay put just because you 'might' make the wrong decision.

So what if the decision you make doesn't work out the way you expected? That's life. Each 'wrong' decision you make exercises your decision making muscles…and you get to make better decisions. A few months ago, I received this in an e-mail:

"Sir, What is the secret of your success?" a reporter asked a bank president.
"Two words"
"And, Sir,what are they?"
"Right decisions."
"And how do you make right decisions?"
"One word."
"And, sir, What is that?"
"Experience."
"And how do you get Experience ?"
"Two words"
"And, Sir, what are they?"
"Wrong decisions"

Aha. "The last thing you want to do is make a wrong decision" NO. The last thing you want to do is scare yourself into not making a decision just because you might make a mistake. Every single successful person in the world has buggered up at least once! How else can you learn? Even as a baby part of learning to walk is falling on your bum!

When I got my A level results, I decided to go to Ibiza as planned instead of staying in this country and 'researching clearing places' like everyone said I should. Right decision, I had fun. When I came back I was offered a place in Sunderland - I had to go the next day (to a place I'd never heard of 200 miles away). Everyone said I should go. I went…wrong decision. So I came back (which everyone told me I shouldn't do). Right decision. I'm saying nothing about 'everyone else' being wrong every time.

A year later, I went back to Sunderland, had the time of my life and met friends I still adore today, 15 years later. All of the decisions I made at the time could have been seen to be wrong (and by many people, they were!) but you know what? A wrong decision can be fixed…and you learn some great lessons from cocking up. I learnt not to listen to other people! ;-)

- Something To Play With -

Make some wrong decisions this week. If you are scared to make a big decision, make some little ones - pizza/pasta, left/right, wine/water. Allow yourself to get it wrong - you might be amazed to find that the wrong decisions can be absolutely right. Want to share how this article affects you? E-mail me

- The Personal Bit -

Where the chuff is this year going? This week has sped by me without me realising what the heck was going on. I'm writing this on Friday, with a to do list of 4 hours work…and an hour to go. Guess I'll be working tomorrow then?! Good job I love what I do really isn't it? The trouble with me is, I keep thinking I've got ages to do things…then I realise I need to have it done by next week. Oopsie!
