Each month, readers write asking questions about how to organize various areas of their lives. This month's question comes from Mark in Atlanta. I met Mark several weeks ago while I was doing a full-day productivity workshop at his company. Mark asked how to attack basement clutter.

Mark, the surest way to deal with basement clutter is to avoid creating it in the first place. This is easier said than done, I know! But since it's already cluttered, let's focus on fixing it and THEN figure out how to keep it clutterfree going forward. I'd be willing to bet that your basement houses all kinds of things you'll never use again, including large and bulky items. Basements are typically a repository for furniture, old appliances, old TVs, broken computers, and a myriad other household pieces that have worn out their welcome but you just haven't given them the heave-ho yet. Every October the ghosts and goblins roam the streets looking for treats. I just love the tiny ones dressed as vegetables. They have no idea what they're doing or why, they just know to stand there looking cute, and they do it so well!
