You Asked...

Each month, readers write asking questions about organizing their homes or offices.

More than one person asked this month's question:
Julie in Leesburg Missouri
Ileana in Miami Florida
Linda in Oklahoma City Oklahoma
Laura in Minneapolis Minnesota
Sandy in Stillwater Oklahoma
Kim in Helena Montana

All these readers asked about how to organize their clothing closets.

1. To Empty or Not To Empty?
When organizing your clothes closet, you'll do one of two things. You'll either empty the entire thing and ADD back only the items you're keeping. Or you'll start at one end of the closet, and REMOVE the items that you want to be rid of. Whether you choose the additive or subtractive method, your goal should be the same... to cull out what you don't use or get value from and organize what remains so you can know what you have and find items when you want them.

2. Cull Out What Isn't Working
Culling out the items that aren't working for you is your next step. How can you decide? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How often do I wear this item? (If you haven't worn it in the past 12 months, chances are you won't)
  • Do I love this item? (Why have things in your life that you don't love?)
  • Does it fit me perfectly? (Why wear something that isn't flattering on you?)
  • Is it still in good shape? (Why are you holding on to ratty, pilled, stretched out or tattered looking clothing? You deserve better than that!)
  • Do I feel great in it and get compliments when I wear it? (If so, it's a keeper!)

You'll find that when you apply these criteria to each of your items of clothing, that many of them just don't measure up. Pay attention to the answers to your questions and begin filling boxes or bags for donation, and one for sale if you have some really nice items that you'd like to consign.

3. Ask For Help
If cleaning out and organizing your closet seems overwhelming and you just can't bring yourself to start, ask for help. Invite a friend over to help you and keep you on task. They can help fold items to be donated, they can give you honest feedback when you try things on, and they can assist you in staying objective when you wander off into emotionland over getting rid of your clothing.

4. Get Over The Money Block
If you're having a tough time letting go of certain items of clothing because all you can think about is how much money you spent buying them, I have some advice for you.

GET OVER IT. The money is gone. If you've made buying mistakes in the past, so what? We all have. Holding onto items simply because they represent spent money is counter-productive. They take up space in your life that you could be giving to something else, AND they make you feel guilty every time you see them hanging there unworn. If they're in good shape and in style, go ahead and consign them and perhaps you'll recoup some of your investment. But if not, remember... keeping something you bought just because of the money you spent doesn't bring that money back.

5. Re-Design the Closet Space
Sometimes the problem with your closet isn't merely that you've accumulated too much clothing. Sometimes it's also because the space itself isn't designed to give you the maximum storage and functionality. Use as much of your walls as possible to get the most from your closet. Double your hanging space by putting a clothing bar above another clothing bar on one wall. Hooks, accessory racks, additional shelves, and over-door racks are a great way to add storage capacity and stay organized. If you need help designing and installing a new closet, contact me for a referral to a Professional Organizer in your area who can help you with the process.

6. Change Your Shopping Habits
I always tell my clients that you can attack the clutter (the symptom) but unless you change the behavior and attitude that created the clutter, you'll eventually end up right back where you started... cluttered and miserable. So once you get your closet organized and maybe even re-designed, it's important to change your buying habits. Use your past buying mistakes to avoid doing the same thing in the future. Be more careful when shopping, and only choose items that meet the above criteria. If you love it, it fits you perfectly, is a good color and style for you, you'll wear it often and get good value from it, it's probably a good purchase.

New Teleclasses for 2006!

Have you ever wanted to take a class but the thought of traffic, gas prices, your busy schedule, or the price of the class stopped you in your tracks? If so, why not try teleclasses?

A teleclass is simply a class you attend on the telephone. You can dial in from your home, your office or anywhere you have a phone. It's essentially a conference call structured like a class or seminar. You dial into a special phone number, you take the class, take notes if you like and if it's an interactive class, you can participate, ask questions and offer opinions.

I invite you to sign up for my upcoming series of weekly teleclasses in April and May. All classes are one hour long and start at 3pm EASTERN time.
