| "Jesus Condemns The Guilty" by
Kirk Hunt
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Matthew 23:33 KJV) It is impossible to describe Jesus' words in this verse as other than condemning and judgmental. They are some of His harshest statements regarding mortal men. This raises the question, who did Jesus single out for such bitter rebuke and harsh reproof? Not the adulterous woman (John 8: 2-11). Jesus clearly refused to condemn her, only her sin. Not Zacchaeus the thieving tax collector and Roman collaborator (Luke 19: 1-10). Jesus enjoyed a meal in his home, and led him to repentance. Not the father of the demon-possessed boy (Mark 9: 17-27). Jesus cast out the demon, despite the father's imperfect faith. Jesus reserved his most bitter rebukes and chastisement for the religious leaders. He repeatedly called them on their hypocrisy. Jesus made sure to announce their false and legalistic practices. The thieves, prostitutes and reprobates flocked to Jesus and listened to his every word. Many of Israel's sinners repented on hearing Jesus' Gospel. The Pharisees ridiculed Him. The Sadducees opposed Him. God opens His arms wide to sinners. He makes innocent those who accept Jesus' redemption from sin. Those who do not accept salvation remain guilty. Jesus' righteousness can convict and condemn the guilty. Jesus' love is so great that He is willing to redeem the sinner from sin. The choice is yours. Think: God honors and accepts humble submission and true repentance. Pray: “Lord, help me to respond to You with a sincere heart and true repentance.” Copyright © September 2008, Kirk Hunt |
