"Before The King" by Kirk Hunt

Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! (2 Samuel 9:6 KJV)

Mephibosheth probably expected David to announce his execution. It's what's supposed to happen to the last rival after a bitter civil war. Physically crippled, lacking allies or influence, Mephibosheth is no match for David's personal combat prowess, or skillful battalions of soldiers.

What can a lone cripple do before, or to, a mighty monarch? To his credit, Mephibosheth doesn't whimper or beg. Per the custom of the day, he presents himself as a loyal servant. Courtesy, humility and obedience are the only response he has to David's power and position.

As you kneel before the throne of heaven, how do you behave? When you appear before your holy and almighty God, what do you have to offer? Are you reverent? Are you humble?

From time to time, we need to be amazed at our wonderful privilege as Christians. The all-powerful calls us to Him. The endless sends for the (severely) limited. The only rational response is courtesy, humility and obedience.

Don't allow yourself to forget who you are and whom you serve. When He created the cosmos, you were not there. When time itself ends, He will remain. Face down on the floor is the natural response to the almighty.

He doesn't need you. You desperately need Him. His love is unearned and un-earnable. Think on these things before your King.

Think: God loves me. Despite who I am.

Pray: “Lord, behold your servant!”
