“Deus Ex Machina But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land. Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Selahammahlekoth. (1 Samuel 23: 27-28 KJV) David and his six hundred irregulars had been betrayed to Saul. The king and his elite warriors trapped David and his men against the side of a mountain. With superior numbers and sword-power on his side, it appeared Saul would finally catch-up to his hated nemesis. The sprinting messenger stopped Saul and his men in their tracks. Minutes away from David's destruction, Saul was forced to abandon the hunt. The place was renamed Sela-hammah-lekoth, “cliff of escapes,” because of David's miraculous rescue. Deus ex machina, the God machine, is only supposed to exist in fiction and stage plays. The main character(s) are saved from certain doom through sudden, improbable intervention. David's rescue from Saul proves that God writes the scripts of our lives. No matter what your circumstances look like, you are never outside of God's power. God's grace is always available to you. There's always a God-given solution, even when that solution is endurance to walk through the fire. Live the life He intends. God specializes in unbeatable bad guys. He strength best appears in impossible situations. No matter how it looks to you, God has a way to intervene. Think: God never abandons His own. Pray: “Lord, help me to trust in You, despite how the situation looks to me.” Copyright © October 2007, Kirk Hunt |
