Green-eyed Monsterby Kirk Hunt

And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. (1 Samuel 18:9 KJV)   Please also read I Samuel 18:69

Pretty girls sang their hearts out in victory and praise. Lovely women danced before the conquering heroes. The daughters of Israel gave their praise generously, but unequally.

The song gave king Saul less credit than a simple foot soldier. Perhaps the women's chorus reflected the natural closeness of commoners to a lowly shepherd-turned-hero. Maybe the verse rhymed well in ancient Hebrew. The King got credit, but not as much as he wanted.

As king, Saul should have been secure in his position and status. "David works for me, so I get credit when he gets credit." With all of the wealth, power and status of being king, Saul should have rested easy. Saul behaved as if any win for David meant a loss for him.

Like Saul, you have been blessed with success and wealth. Certainly, some look on your situation and see many gifts and blessings from God. Is there room in your life for graciousness and generosity? Can you share the spotlight, now and again?

If someone else gets good press, how do you respond? The best of us are happy when others are blessed. If you have a different response, you may want to check in your mirror for glowing green eyes.

Think: Jealousy is unworthy of me and Him.

Pray: “Lord, let my heart rest in what you send to me, no matter what others get.”
