“ And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? (1 Samuel 15:17 KJV) Please read 1 Samuel 15: 1–23 Saul's anointment as king of Israel was not an illustrious day. Some would call it embarrassing. Saul hid from Samuel's oil horn, like a fearful child. A search party found their future king among the suitcases. Unfortunately, Saul learned to over-estimate his own skills, ability and stature. The esteem-challenged appointee grew to be an ego-poisoned despot. Saul forgot that God gave him his place, despite himself. God is a big God. He has legions of angels at His command. God includes us in His plans as a benefit to us, not Himself. We are instruments of His purpose. God commands and we act. No matter where you find yourself now, you are small compared to God. Saul's “mercy” at Amalek is willful and premeditated disobedience. The king of Israel learned to think little of God and highly of himself. Saul was more correct trying to hide inside a duffel bag. When Saul tried to hide from God, that was an error. When he decided he was big enough to disobey God, that was a blunder of the highest order. No one gets that big. Ever. Think: God is big and I am small, no matter what assignment God gives me. Pray: “Lord, help me to remain obedient to You, no matter what else changes.”
