The Symbols of Miracleby Kirk Hunt

And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. (John 2:6-7 KJV)

Jesus' first public miracle didn't just demonstrate His power. It taught rich and meaningful lessons. The symbols of this miracle are every bit as important as the power of the miracle.

The ceremonial pots sat empty after serving their purpose. All too soon, dirty hands would use them again. The water-pots represent law or rules based living. The law points us to clean lives but rules are an incomplete approach to God. Without power to stay clean, we'll get dirty again.

The water represents the Holy Spirit. Water is not just a cleansing agent, but is a vital element of life itself. The empty pots became a means of sustenance as well as cleanliness.

Drawing and carrying water represents obedience. It isn't the big or small of the act, but the attitude motivating the act. If we submit ourselves to God, God will transform our lives.

Wine is symbolic of Jesus' shed blood. His Blood saves us. His sacrifice preserved us.

Wine also illustrates transformation. God's power transformed mere water into exceptional wine. The common becomes extraordinary in the hands of God. If we obey, God's power makes changes in us for the better. Usually despite the expectations of others, and ourselves.

Rich in meaning, Jesus' miracle reaches out to us today. Listen close. He is speaking to you.

Think: Jesus' miracle is full of meaning and teaching.

Pray: “Lord, help me understand all You want to teach me.”
