Dreamin! - Live Your Road Trip Dream - June, 2006 EZezine

Hello Summer!

Summer is definitely here.  Every time we head down the highway there are loads of RVs and cars on the road.  The lot at the nearby RV rental place is nearly empty, the two RV Parks nearby are full, the State Parks nearby are busy, motels sport "no vacancy" signs, and Camping World’s lot is overflowing – surely all good signs that people are out enjoying adventures – at least in the great state of Oregon!

Send us an email and let us know what you are observing this summer – do people seem to be traveling just as much as last year?  Are they staying in one place longer?  What about your own travels?  Share your thoughts with us.

The Albrecht's Share Their Family Adventure

It started with the question, "What would you do if you won the lottery?" There was another question asked, "What do you envision us doing after retirement?"

Both of those questions were answered with, "I'd buy an RV and travel the country." At some point, in what was actually a very brief conversation, a look of complete clarity drew across Kay's face. I don't know if she saw it as a epiphany at the time, but it was one of those moments (you'll pardon the cliché) where time stood still...a moment that will forever be one of the timeless snapshots in my memory...a moment that set in motion the changing of the path of our lives.

All she said was, "We don't have to wait for retirement or a winning lottery ticket to do that. We can do that now." In minutes, she painted the financial and logistical picture for me as quickly as it crossed her mind. The time was right. Our daughters, Christianne and Sara, would both be graduating high school soon. Our son, Bryan, would have another year until he had to start high school.  She could take a year-long leave from her teaching job and home-school him on the road. It would be the learning opportunity of a lifetime for him and a chance for us to realize a dream while we were still young enough and healthy enough and financially able. What if tomorrow never came? What if we didn't take this opportunity now and weren't offered a chance later?

The Albrecht’s set forth some goals for their trip –

see their website at www.albrechtadventure.com for more details.

  • To gain a greater appreciation of the USA
  • To offer our son, Bryan, an educational experience that can't be offered within the confines of the four walls of a classroom
  • To connect with each other
  • to escape and abandon the suburbs
  • To photograph and document everything
  • Rock-'n'-Roll, Baseball, and Apple Pie

After all, isn't this what it is all about?

Wealth is Freedom Tour

The boomers are such an interesting generation.  They have changed everything in each succeeding decade of their lives, from the hippie movement of the 60s, to child-rearing in the 70s, to the retirement movement of this decade.  We’ve talked in this column about several ways that boomers are changing the face of retirement and travel, but we haven’t touched on the idea of volunteerism and philanthropy.  This is definitely another trend in the boomers “reinvention of retirement”.

This month you get to meet Byron and Mariah Edington of Kauai, Hawaii who are taking this year to travel the US to promote financial literacy amongst our youth – a badly needed focus if you’ve ever watched a young person at McDonalds try to make change, much less balance a checkbook or, <gasp>, invest money for their future.

The Edington’s were recently in the Northwest and I had the opportunity to enjoy some time on our patio with them before they headed back to Hawaii to get ready for their journey, of course using Live Your Road Trip Dream as a guide!  They shared a little of what their “Wealth is Freedom” Tour is all about.  Here is a short excerpt from their materials, and you can read more about their project at http://www.edgington1.com

We’re dedicated to financial education, the abolition of negative myths about money, establishing good money habits early, and the eradication of ‘money guilt’.  We believe that debt is equal to incarceration.  We believe that wealth allows us to live the life we
deserve. Americans are losing our independence to easy credit, spending as therapy, acceptance of debt, and false assumptions about wealth.  All these inspired us to establish our business, titled Wealth is Freedom.

How have you reinvented yourself or what are you thinking of doing?  We’ll share your stories and ideas – just send them along (carol@roadtripdream.com)
