Dreamin! - Live Your Road Trip Dream - May, 2006 EZezine

Happy one-year anniversary to our newsletter - Dreaming!

This issue of Dreaming marks the beginning of the second year that we have been writing this newsletter. We’re just in time for the summer road trip season to be in full-swing with the Memorial Day weekend upon us, so get ready to travel.

Even though gas is at a record high of $3.00+ per gallon, most people are continuing to hit the road.  Both AAA and RVIA find that we are just a travel-hungry society and we are going to still find ways to do our road trips.

We recently figured out that a 500-mile trip at 20 MPG will cost about $20 more this year than last – hardly enough to make us cancel our plans.  Just skip a couple of morning latte’s or pack a picnic on your trip instead of eating out a couple of times and you’ve made up the difference!

We hope that you are enjoying this long weekend start to the summer season and that you are enjoying Dreaming, where we bring you inspiring stories and the latest tips.

We WON!!

Those of you who follow this newsletter know that last month we announced that we had been chosen as one of three finalists for the Benjamin Franklin Awards – Book of the Year for Excellence and Innovation in Marketing.  The award announcement and ceremony was in Washington, DC, where Carol was already presenting a seminar on book marketing (how appropriate, huh?).

Carol recaps the excitement of the evening:  The awards ceremony was held in a large ballroom at the convention center.  There were around 500 people there.  A big stage was set with all the awards set out and a huge screen that announced the winners and their book covers.  It looked like the Oscars!  When the moderator started talking about "this year one book stood out from all the others..." I knew it wasn't me, then she started talking about the "multi-pronged marketing approach, starting with AAA", and I went Oh no -- that's me!  I didn't hear another thing that she said from there on!  My heart was pounding so hard I could hardly walk up there.  I did manage to say a few things about how anyone can do this with a "good book, a good marketing plan and lots of determination!"  When I left the stage, people I don't even know (and many that I did know) were stopping me to congratulate me, take pictures, etc.  It was incredible!  The buzz the next day was so fun.

Thanks for the "Future" Memories

Hi Carol,

Your book and the ideas behind it have been a real inspiration to us. We have rassled with a lot of the hassles you've raised and found ways around and that encouraged us. We are leaving July 9th for about 10 weeks in our RV as a result. We did shorten our trip plans because of the sky rocketing gas prices and we'll look for ways to shave expense all along the way as we go, too. There will be two family reunions (Missouri and Minnesota), a visit to Oshkosh, and an exploration of "The Great River Road" along the Mississippi. Thanks for giving our need for adventure a boost!

It is so wonderful when we get these kinds of letters that people have found our information helpful and have actually set their date as a result.  Congratulations to Steve and Karin.

Take a Parent along!

We’ve talked about taking your children along on your adventures, about working on the road while you travel, but have you thought of taking an aging parent along?  Sure enough, there is a family out there doing that too!  Jana & Vince Ripley take her 84-year-old mother along, and she has a ball.

Carol -

Things came up this week and I have been unable to attend one of your talks but wanted to let you know we LOVED your book.  Since I'd done the planning, budgeting, bill paying stuff...... I skipped right to "THE TRIP"

I read it all within 24 hours!  And I'd say right out loud - "we thought the same thing!"  or "I remember doing that"

The only difference is we aren't able to get out and walk as much as you guys, since I walk w/ a cane (very bad knee that needs to be replaced) AND we have my 84 year old mom with us!  But with our handicapped sticker, we do get to see lots from the road.

I cried as I read the end of your trip.  I cry at the end of each of our trips because of several things...... I am awed by the beauty our country has to offer, I feel so blessed we've been able to see what we've seen...... and I hate to see the trip end - although look forward to hugging the grandbabies!

We leave again in about 3 weeks for the Midwest (my mom's class and family reunions in Nebraska) BUT!!!  We're sight seeing along the way of things we haven't seen before - and you had some great tips for us!  Thank you!

As I mentioned earlier, I read the TRIP part of your book......Now that I'm getting ready for our next trip - I'll read the FIRST  part of your book.... the part I already knew about.... but am always ready for more tips.

I have a packing list I keep on my computer and just print it off for each trip..... actually a list for us AND a list for mom.  It includes pills, how many shirts/pants etc, computer/camera equipment, snacks, trip-tiks, right down to toothbrush and comb!

Hugs from the RipTrip Trio.....

Jana & Vince Ripley …and Mom too.
