Tax Information for 2009 Planning

Residential Energy Property Credit -
You can receive a tax credit of up to 30% of the purchase price for eligible property placed in service after 12/31/08 and before 1/1/2011.  Eligible improvements include insulation, exterior windows, exterior doors, central air and furnaces.  Dollar caps have been removed for the solar hot water property, heat pumps and wind energy.

Unemployment Benefits –  For 2009’s tax return, you can exclude up to $2,400 of unemployment income.  Individuals who involuntarily were separated from their job between 9/1/2008 and 1/1/2010 can elect to pay 35% of their COBRA coverage and treate it like they paid the full amount.

First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit -
The limit increased for 2009 to $8,000.  This credit applies only to first-time home buyers of their principal residence after 12/31/08 through 11/30/09.  There is NO payback with this new credit.

Estimated Taxes for Small Businesses -
New law decreases required estimated tax payments for individuals whose incomes primarily come from a small business in 2009.  quarterly estimated tax payments can be computed based on 90% rather than 100% of their 2008 returns.
