If you don’t interview well, your chances of getting a job are slashed. If you do interview well – it’s a huge competitive edge. The good news is this: because it’s a skill, it can be learned. Here are some key things you can do before, during and after the interview that will improve your overall chances of moving forward in the recruiting process, especially in this tough economy: Before the interview: 1. Prepare 2 days in advance: wear the best suit possible – try it on in advance - ensure you look immaculate, and that the suit fits well 2. Research the company using the web, news, guides from WetFeet/Vault & the interviewer if possible 3. Practice, practice, practice - Career Services can help or get an Interview guide & practice in front of a mirror. Or even better – have a friend interview you 4. Know where you are interviewing – if you’ve never been there before – go the day before to ensure you know where to go & get there early During the interview: 5. Give the interviewer a strong handshake, but don’t bring them to their knees! Look them in the eye & smile. Act like you are not nervous. If you palms get sweaty, wipe them on your leg before you shake 6. If you’ve met other company reps, mention them & be clear about how and where you met 7. Answer the question and don’t go on tangents - If you are not sure you are answering the question – ask the interviewer if you are going down the right path 8. Be authentic and honest with all your responses – don’t act like someone you are not – they can always tell 9. Have questions to ask them written in advance so you won’t forget them or there won’t be awkward silence After the interview: 10. After the interview: send a thank you note – via email (so make sure you get their card or email address) and mention something that happened during the interview to make the connection. 11. If things don't work out and you don't get the job, keep in touch with the interviewer anyway. It's a competitive enviornment out there and networking can only help. We hope these tips will help you master this process. If you want to practice with a career coach, please contact us at www.sixfigurestart.com. We wish you luck in your career search!
