Are you waiting for the right time, and it is just not now? Well, you’re wrong about the timing because now is always the perfect time to do something. This doesn’t mean that you drop everything and cold call that target company. After all it might be after business hours or you might not have done enough research yet. Similarly, starting right now doesn’t mean you call everyone in your network and overload your calendar. It also doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be smart about the best time to ask for a raise. However, it does mean that today, right now is the perfect time to do something: to review your calendar over the next week and strategize; to update your resume; to research companies; to set up a few networking meetings for the next few weeks; to contact colleagues for testimonials to back up your request for a raise. In other words, do something now to jumpstart over the inertia and maintain momentum in your career. People who just wait for the right time to start and do not set a deadline for their career goals will year after year look back and lament that they are stuck in their job or at their same title or at their same salary. Meanwhile, next year you will be a year ahead of where you are now if you just start today. The best time to plant a tree…was 20 years ago. The second best time is today. -- Chinese Proverb I wish I saved more when I was younger, bought real estate earlier, took the international post when I didn’t yet have kids…We can all look back and see opportune times when we should have done something sooner than we did. However, do you want to have that same regret again years from now? Start today. Make a plan. Schedule your moves. Set a deadline. Caroline Ceniza-Levine is a co-founder of SixFigureStart.
