Writing Lab News
|
Welcome to the December issue of Writing Lab News. The big news for this month is that I've finished the ebook I've been talking about. Also in this issue is an article on the appropriate pay for writing, advice on writing portfolios and a couple of other goodies. Enjoy the holidays - when they arrive - and see you next year! |
In this issue:
Getting Started In Blogging - Subscriber Previewby Sharon Hurley Hall You're the first to see my new free ebook - Getting Started in Blogging. The ebook covers the areas that most blogging newbies might have trouble with, such as understanding hosting and choosing among the different blogging platforms. For those who get past that first step, there's advice on link building, monetization and blogging for business. These are the things I wish someone had shared with me when I started blogging and now I'm sharing them with you. To get the ebook, just click here and it's yours. Feel free to share the ebook download link with your friends. Writing Pay - How Low Will You Go?by Dana Prince Wherever writers gather, there are discussions on the right rate for a piece of writing work. Dana Prince weighs in on the issue. Here's an excerpt: When I got started, I was in awe of the fact that I could make money writing articles and blog posts for the internet. Granted, most of the articles weren’t in-depth and took little time to put together but it didn’t take me long to look around and see what other freelance writers were making. It’s healthy economics to strive for a larger income each year and being paid a nickel, dime, or dollar per word rather than a penny is also going to do something for most people’s sense of worth as a writer. What one writer sees as acceptable pay, because it amounts to a decent hourly wage, will make another indignant. It’s definitely personal. What I do firmly believe is that no matter what our average rate is, we should all strive to continuously move forward. Read the rest of Writing Pay - How Low Will You Go? Creating An Online Writing Portfolioby Sharon Hurley Hall If you're going to showcase your writing, then you need a great portfolio. An article I wrote recently for Suite 101 highlights some of the factors to consider. Here's a short excerpt:Another great way to make a useful online writing portfolio is to use a social bookmarking site like Delicious to collect writing samples. The advantage of doing this is that writers can tag each item by publication and type of work, making it easy for clients to find the samples they are looking for. To get the best from this strategy, use the browser bookmarklet available in Delicious and bookmark work as soon as it is published online. Use the notes feature to add details that will help to answer clients' questions about the work. I don't know about you, but I'm already thinking about the holiday season. I've started to tell clients about my availability in December and early January and I am planning ahead with my blogging work so I can take a full week off to spend with my family. In the past month, I've been working on my usual gigs, finding time to reflect on a year of travel blogging, to rant about travel trends that tick me off, to look at alternatives for the WordPress comment box and to consider the usefulness of a blog series. I also started my new writing gig at Suite101, and am enjoying the chance to write about topics I usually don't have time for. You will also notice that I've finished my ebook and I've got another one in the works which will be out early next year. I've also started writing for the Location Independent Parents site, which should be going live any day now. I expect that all these ventures will keep me busy into the holidays and beyond. I hope you manage to take a break and enjoy the holidays.
