Discussion of the revamped Florida Honey Queen Program. Guidelines have been developed by Beth Fox and posted to the web site http://floridabeekeepers.org  . Dicussion that in order to get a number of candidates the program will have to be publicized among local associations, many of which are new and don't know about the program. Motion to provide $300 not to exceed $375 for brochures and other publicity to begin the program by Gary Ranker. Seconded by Brendhan Horne. Passed unanimously, Beth Fox to provide information at the next meeting on acquiring a tiara and sash for prospective queen.

Discussion of the June 19, 2010 event at the Pine Jog Nature Center in Palm Beach. A web site should be up and running soon. A number of activities are being planned, including honey judging and silent auction for the queen fund. Members urged to bring things to be auctioned off. Registration form has already been placed in the newsletter, on the web site http://floridabeekeepers.org , and as an insert into the Melitto Files. Brendhan Horne has shipped a spread sheet of expenses versus revenues to Dr. Sanford as well as a program breakdown in terms of time; Dr. Stephen Buchmann will be the featured speaker. A board of manangers meeting is set for 4:00 p.m. to conclude the day. Brendhan Horne to post soon a list of possible hotels in the region; he was unable to acquire a block of rooms in any local establishment.

Discussion of insurance. Hard to find depending on coverage required. Recommendations to check with the Farm Bureau http://www.floridafarmbureau.org/; The American Beekeeping Federation http://abfnet.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=21 ; and a new coverage, which includes honey bee mortality has also become available http://www.lkalmanson.com/animal-insurance/bee-mortality .

Discussion about the fall convention to be held in Fort Myers and hosted by the Beekeepers of Southwest Florida. President Keith Councell to be looking at various venues. It was suggested he contact the Apalachee Beekeepers Association for tips on designing a convention and also consult old hands who have done this for a while, including Elmore Herman, not on the call this evening. Motion to provide $5,000 up front money to the Beekeepers of Southwest Florida for the convention by Gary Ranker. Seconded by Cindy Belknap, passed unamimously. Remark from Kelley that $6,000 had been set aside for this in the annual budget.

Bill Dunn provided a short update on the electronic financial database he and Treasurer Bert Kelley are jointly working on.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.  Next meeting scheduled Tuesday June 1, 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time via conference call. Discussion that some could not make Monday meetings; most believed it would be good to alternate between Mondays and Tuesdays for conference calls.

Members of the Board of Managers are requested to contact Mr. Duggar indicating whether they will attend as the meeting approaches.

Respectfully submitted,

Dr. Malcolm T. Sanford
