CATCH THE BUZZ

Get Well Jim

Most beekeepers who read Bee Culture magazine know, or certainly know of Dr. Jim Tew, from the Ohio State Bee Lab in Wooster, Ohio. He's been a speaker at more beekeeping meetings than you can imagine, and he’s been one our writers since before I started as Editor. With the exception of a stint working as the Federal Extension Specialist for African Honey Bees, Jim is our writer with the most seniority. Dr. Collison, just for your information, has written more articles because he started writing shortly after Jim but didn’t take a sabbatical to do African bees.

As a historical aside, this situation mirrors that of the American Bee Journal and (Gleanings In) Bee Culture magazines. The Bee Journal started years before Gleanings did, but the Bee Journal took a break during the Civil War, so their claim to fame is being the Oldest Bee Journal in the U.S., while Bee Culture claims to be the longest continuously published Bee Journal in the U.S. Neither, I suppose is critical today, but it’s one of those factoids that’s fun to know.

Anyway, last week Jim had surgery to repair a long-time condition and it didn’t go quite as easy as the doctors thought it would, and Jim’s recovery time will be extended a bit. So he’s going to be stuck at home for a couple of months, unable to work in his wood shop, cavort with his grandchildren, or help his wife Vallie with the household chores. Sherry Ferrell, his right hand at the lab will carry the load from that end, so things will get done there. In fact, she just finished the annual honey sales that raise operating funds for the lab – the lab has several every Christmas season, some in Wooster but most at the University in Columbus – and sells honey and honey products online from the lab if you’re interested. That’s a strong hint, in case you missed it...go to www.honeybeelab.com, but because of the strong demand don't count on anything for Christmas, but get some lip balm or exotic honey just to have them around for the rest of the winter.

If you're inclined and would like to send Jim a get well message, or Sherry or Vallie a sympathy card for having to put up with a self-admitted terrible patient…send along your thoughts to them at:
